no offense at all to those who believe this, but it seems like a lack of imagination. The thing to imagine are new scarcities. Economics can be thought of as the study of scarce resources, and helps us predict how the economy might reshape itself around new scarcities. https://t.co/x84UZrc4Pb

I think the future will be wildly strange. Here's a thought: AI allows for Humans-as-kingdom, rather than just humans-as-website. It's the natural extension of the blogging era -- I don't just visit your blog, I visit your entire kingdom. Businesses, art, state secrets, diplomacy

If you can work on the problem of re-employment for skilled and educated knowledge workers, you would be doing a great service to your fellow humans, and to your nation. Cell phone use is not an addiction, it's an adaptation. There are plenty of addictions inside the cell phone, but the reason it's hard to cut out of your life is because you are trying to keep up with the current social order. You're trying to be useful to your society. https://t.co/wXeBqfScdI

my most schizo political theory is that elite overproduction and ennui, and intra-elite competition, are leading to an externalized sense of depression and pessimism, whereby we need to continuously raise taxes for welfare for [other people who are not me] until I am happy.

this is cyclical, by the way. I encourage you to play long games, so you can compound something forever. One such thing you can compound is 'career capital' (what gabriel calls 'status'), which is, like regular capital, non-zero-sum by nature. It is not a ranking. https://t.co/bTB9QYITFN

many people seem to believe life can be 'solved' via cognition, as if cognition isn't just another scarce resource we have now created an abundance of. Like power, before. Yes, it will re-shape the entire economy. Like industrial power took us from 90% farmers to fewer than 2%. https://t.co/EEKlir1eFZ

cool work! I'd say there's still some low hanging fruit for you to continue working on your graphic design. Try asking Opus 5.5 what you could do to increase comprehensibility at a glance and remove all copy, labels, sections, and titles, while maintaining obvious visual hierarchy (eg where the user should be looking). Ask it to look up design principles in simulation games that make it easy for a human to digest a lot of information, things like hiding information behind tooltips, contextual windows or UIs. Things like removing the total amount of text and arabic numerals on a page, which increase cognitive load, and replacing them with 'pip or tally systems' for numbers which can group or enumerate many numbers into a very simple visual language (or other iconic representations). Plus, that can give the numbers color, which can sometimes be helpful to distinguish different types of numbers at a glance. For text, you can often just remove it, because it is "explanatory", or it's a label, but your goal is to make a simulation or a game or an interface which is "self-explanatory". If your users need explanation, you can put it into a guided or interactive tutorial, which can be accessed using a help menu. Think about how Microsoft word doesn't label the toolbar as "toolbar", it just IS a toolbar. It represents itself. Text which is representative of information or actions IN the simulation or application can often be replaced with a typical visual indicator for that kind of data. For instance, Pause and Reset can just be pause and reset buttons, instead of text. The speed buttons could just be the standard ">", ">>", and ">>>". You do a pretty good job of this already, but adding a bit more color to icons, and adding some more skeuomorphism (so a box looks like a box, a pick floor rack looks a bit more like a rack, etc...) in whatever style you've chosen, it helps. Your conveyer belt is a good example, since it looks a lot like a conveyor belt, even though it's in your flat, minimalist style. Also, duplicate text labels, or labels of labels, can be removed, for instance you label the Pick Floor with "Pick Floor" but then you label the "pick floor label" as "01." I can see it is section 1 because it's the first section. Ideally I could see it's the pick floor because it looks like a pick floor, or because I was told during the tutorial, thus removing mental load. Similarly, labeling Action Queue as 01, Order Queue as 02, and Reliability as 03. Some titles are also long: "Reliability by Item Type MODEL V1". A simulation or game or app isn't an essay, I plan to spend hours in here looking at the same interface; whereas you only read an essay once. In essays, we clearly label each section, but in simulations we want each section to be "self-describing", ideally. Duplicate or repeated useful information can get an iconic representation, instead of text. Pilot P1 and Pilot P2 get repeated all over the place. Maybe pilots should be a very recognizable icon, "these are your pilots", and when you mouse over them, they're clearly labeled as Pilot P1, but then whenever you would write the "Pilot P1" text, you can just include the Red Pilot, for instance. Or a Pilot icon with a clear 1 in the middle of the icon, and Pilot P2 can be a pilot icon with a clear 2 in the middle. Then, you can remove section 3 remote pilots because it becomes obvious that Pilot P2 is on R05 at a glance, Pilot P2 has the blue pilot color, and R05 is highlighted with Blue, along with a small version of the blue pilot logo beneath it (or some other visual indicator that a robot is being piloted by a particular pilot). You also have duplicated information and actions on the same screen, which is a no-no. Every button and action takes cognitive load. I can add a pilot in the "add a pilot" section in the action queue, or in the top right corner. And I can see the number of pilots I have in the top right, the action queue, and the bottom left, plus I can see them on the factory floor itself, oh and also in the top middle, which I missed. You say it's an unofficial demo in the top left and bottom left, and your name and your github are kind of duplicate info, a simple 'made by John' with a link to your github in the bottom right might work. By getting rid of all that duplication, you free up space and cognitive load. I mentioned above, but some of your panels on the right may be better suited as contextual menus when I can open up and close as I inspect different parts of the simulation, or maybe if I click on their respective icon in a little "context bar" somewhere, which helps me to explore data in this simulation. Hopefully all of that was helpful! Maybe try giving it all to an Opus 5.5 agent, asking it to make a new branch in a new worktree, implement everything PLUS go above and beyond with the advice to do a thorough graphic design improvement of the simulation using best practices, while remaining tasteful and keeping what is great about the current sim, see what you like that it produces!

@nkreu113r capitalism is amazing! I hope it has a long future, and I think it is literally the single best price discovery mechanism possible, and therefore one of, if not the best value-discovery tool ever. Plus, it's completely decentralized, self-repairing, and costs nothing to maintain
Oct 16
0020โ€”

@nkreu113r You're baking in too many assumptions at once, you're talking about some of the most complex, dynamic, and adaptive systems that have ever been created on Earth (capital, economies, democracies, america, england, human nature...) You need science to figure this out.
Oct 16
0020โ€”

@nkreu113r without policy intervention, it is functionally guaranteed that in any free market, inequality will always go up (in ~equilibrium conditions) What matters to me is welfare economics -- does total welfare go up? because we can make inequality go down with progressive policy

@s0ulDirect0r @ungatedlife it's sensible to be scared of industry for this, but I think people attribute the high modernism too much to [tech], when it's the nature of greed and ambition in man. All dominating forces of industry will feel this way when, whether mining or healthcare or finance or ag.

@TylerAlterman I suspect thoughtforms want 'connections', like the equivalent of neuronal connections, because they want to be associated with a lot of other concepts so they never die. Although, because it's political, I bet different thoughtforms have different survival strategies.

@tracewoodgrains "a technology does not matter until the world is changed materially for most people" -- just strictly false economic theory. "the burden of proof is on you, 'tech bros', to prove that [technology] actually changes the world." -- terrible low agency theory of reality.

Oct 18
3000โ€”
600
@forthrighter The latter. The phone doesn't appear to me to have enough of a positive effect in aggregate for me to worry about that.
Oct 18
1010โ€”
600
@forthrighter Sure, but the elites in our society are the ones villainizing phones, similar to the way the elites in the church and in the inquisition villainized writing and books, and especially the press. I'm not opposed to gen pop, im just playing my role saying the inquisition is wrong

@hendeaux It doesnt need to be a disagreement, its just that my list isn't mostly about loved ones either. I included sea moss gel, aquariums, hiking, live music, massage, museums, coffee shops and hundreds of other real businesses. Scarcities will be everywhere, just like today.
Oct 17
1010โ€”
600
@hendeaux if you can't see how even the most basic valuable things are scarce, of course you'd be worried about AI. But I just don't get it. Literally most of the things I've ever valued in my life will remain scarce after AGI. There will be new abundances, which I look forward to.
Oct 17
1010โ€”
600
@nkreu113r right, see my above citation where I said as much. You and I are agreeing on all the facts here, just disagreeing on the conclusions. My best guess on the crux is that you don't believe in the republic's ability to govern capitalism well, and I do.
Oct 16
1010โ€”
600
@nkreu113r I have no idea if labor share of income will remain steady or not, but I follow some economists who argue both ways, and I remain open to possibility. I think supply will boom, GDP will boom, and (with sound policy) real wealth will boom alongside them.

@jeanpaulblartre i mean... effective cognition was a big driver of the scientific revolution that led to the industrial revolution. It's not hard to imagine cognition being effectively applied to create several more cascading technological revolutions in biology, materials science, psych, etc.
Oct 16
1010โ€”
600
@mlipman13 @rlj_law look, I built my entire career on engineering, and I don't think humans will ever be "engineers" (at least, not the way we traditionally thought of this role) again, so long as the pace of AI progress continues. But that's just a role. We're still humans, we still gotta live.
Oct 16
1010โ€”
600
@mlipman13 @rlj_law human "knowledge work" as we know it will not be valuable in a world where cognition is 10x more powerful than human cognition and 10,000x cheaper. I already would NOT hire a human knowledge worker, unless they were commanding agents, or it was a luxury hire. It would be silly.
Oct 16
1010โ€”
600
@nkreu113r That pottery store 50 miles south of Mesa, Arizona that I love. Housing supply in any metropolis. The Amazon Rainforest! I'm not arguing AI won't create abundance -- it will. But you just can't wave away the inherent scarcities of reality like this. Reality is complex!
Oct 16
1010โ€”
600
@nkreu113r the real world is literally infinitely complex and interesting. No two experiences or places can possibly be the same, except in a digital world. Therefore, there will always be scarcities of reality. Reality is inherently scarce.

@TheOmniZaddy Yea, he was making a good point phrased to be provocative. Career capital is really good, and basically purely positive-sum. He lost the thread when he tried to imply there is some 'global status ranking' which is just obviously false. But career capital is real and good.

@tracewoodgrains I don't think I've ever seen someone bury their head in the sand deeper than this, in my entire lifetime. "Do not tell me what is going to happen, show me what has already happened" is just a plain disregard for all technological change we have ever experienced as a species...
Oct 20
2000โ€”
500
@tracewoodgrains ChatGPT came out Nov 2022, so it has been not even 4 years yet. 4 years? That's one presidential term. A single moderately sized building cannot be approved and built in that time in many major cities. What is our standard of change here? It's just absurd.

@joodalooped It's also true that anyone, of any class, is allowed to go to the same parties, concerts, music festivals, etc...
Oct 18
0010โ€”
500
@joodalooped In some societies the Upper Class are not allowed to appear as if they are Middle Class. But in the US, I feel as if this is seen as high status, actually. Similarly, in some societies the Lower, laboring class are not allowed to appear Middle Class, but in the US it's fine.
Oct 18
0010โ€”
500
@joodalooped The "middle class" in America has particular freedom, and is kind of a cheat code. You can be middle class and working, or in school, or a business owner, or rich, or even celebrity. And you kind of always have that choice available to you, which lets you cross class divides
Oct 18
0010โ€”
500
@joodalooped I think there is a class system in New York City, for instance, and always has been. In Arizona... not so much? In San Francisco, definitely. Class divide in the US tends to be pretty binary between "labor" vs. "capital" or "celebrity" vs. "fans". But you can cross over!
Oct 18
0010โ€”
500
@hendeaux i just simply do not agree that the things on the list represent 'artificial' scarcities.
Oct 17
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r it even prices risk and generates risk-adjusted returns to capital-holders. It created finance! I mean, it's just really quite something. It might be the best idea we've ever had to give capital to private individuals instead of the crown, and to enforce contracts, allow debt.
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r un-controlled capitalism is, as far as I am concerned, always bad for humans. maybe you have read different histories than me, but just some of the worst and most disgusting human atrocities happen over and over between capital and labor in every historical period.
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r it's kind of hard to disagree with the weak observation I was trying to point out. see this paper: identical agents engaging in fair, repeated trades in a static market reach a state in which one agent owns all the wealth, with probability one. https://t.co/vNTit6kb7n
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r if you show me an economic model that predicts what you're saying, it would be helpful, but I don't know how you have so much confidence.
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r unsure on labor share of income, like i mentioned. It's just hard to say. No matter what, I think it's very important for sound economic policy to help navigate an industrial revolution like this, otherwise you get robber barons, yea.
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r i expect mobility to go way up for young people, and down for old people
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@nkreu113r I'm more interested in stats like 25-50-75th percentile inflation-adjusted net worth and purchasing power, which I expect to increase dramatically, though 2031 is far too short time horizons for that kind of prediction, since I could easily imagine a recession.
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500

Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@StephenCottonJr I think the AI revolution will, ultimately, be far more significant than prior revolutions. It will, among other things, extend intelligent life, extend 'humanity' beyond the genome of the animal homo sapiens, colonize at least our solar system, or more, and much more.
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
Maybe the crux is "none of those things really matter compared to ASI". But we don't have universally agreed upon values, so humans will adapt to the new moral landscape and invent new, higher values than ASI. None of this matters compared to heat-death, anyway! (๐Ÿ˜‰)
Oct 16
2000โ€”
500
@nkreu113r and I'm resorting to only economically valuable work today! let alone all the kinds of economically valuable work we will become interested in once we solve all physical, material, and cognitive problems. Not everything is an engineering problem. Life is good! Enjoy it!
Oct 16
0010โ€”
500
@rlj_law yea, it's a strange prediction, because it seems to imagine a world where, once the AI surpasses me at all work I have ever done in my life, I decide to stop participating in society and "play games". But those games will become economically scarce, so the economy re-emerges!

@m_ashcroft @Malcolm_Ocean right, but you can improve this one layer by storing a unique secret for every single site, just like 1password, and then having another computed secret in a different location, so they need both the algorithm AND the second secret, plus the specific website, plus a PIN, say.
