If you want better parties, you have to make better parties. Enter: Maximum Republicans. New York needs a competitive political ecology, and two parties that compete to offer a strong, positive vision of governance. Here's my part of that grand project: https://t.co/48wx5zqfQz

What do Maximum Republicans love? >> America >> New York City >> A city for families and children >> Economic growth is a top priority, and a governmental imperative >> Educational quality, high standards >> Public order and beauty >> Techno-optimism >> State capacity >> Fiscal stewardship >> New York Maximalism >> Abundance and supply >> City and state first, do not nationalize your politics

I will be voting for Governor Hochul for another term. Her strong (and increasingly strong) positions on housing supply are at the core of my decision, and her other supply positions (like all-of-the-above energy, nuclear development, etc) are great to see. I have plenty of disagreements with her, and with the Democratic Party--especially on public order and spending--but those are outweighed in the calculus. My take on Blakeman: he is not good on core supply issues, and the recent debate (the moment where he discussed rising home prices as a result of relative, policy-induced scarcity as a good thing) made that very clear. I would also agree with this take: https://t.co/xCeoF7Z8mq My ideal candidate would use the governor's pro-supply positions as a starting point, go further, emphasize public order much more, emphasize fiscal stewardship and getting bang-for-buck more, etc. But the governor comes closest as a candidate, even as I have disagreements.

People regularly ask "Why all the memorization?" and there are several answers: - Most people are not called to memorize anything as adults. Simply polishing off the rust induces pride and self-esteem - That which is not known cannot be integrated. "I can just Google it" does not allow you to tie together ideas in your head, both actively and in the background as you live your life. - Automaticity, "the ability to perform a task effortlessly, quickly, and without conscious attention as a result of extensive learning, repetition, and practice." When we are young, we memorize things like multiplication tables that we know we'll use a lot. It would be inefficient if it took effort every time we had to do basic multiplication. So training those skills such that they execute automatically frees up cognitive space for higher order and more syntopical thinking. - Memorizing something is kind of like conditioning a muscle. Once you have it memorized, you get more delight out of reciting or recalling it. And: memorizing a poem or a work allows you to have the physical experience of being a vessel for that work. It is a way to invite the muse into your life in a way that is beyond your current years or capacity. Perhaps you cannot write a transcendent poem, but you can still feel transcendence through the recitation of another's work.

FYI: my most commonly used memorization technique is walking around my living room and talking to myself aloud, reciting things repeatedly. Especially for longer things. I started doing it in 8th grade when I was on the science academic team and needed to memorize chemical formulas. Staring at paper silently didn't work that well, and flashcards (which are great, I do like them, and they're good when you don't want to look like a nut by speaking to yourself in McDonald's or something) were fine, but speaking the things *confidently* (not under my breath, I'm fully speaking as if to another person) clearly activates some other pathway to recall. I'm not exactly sure what it is (perhaps someone here does), but once you've spoken something enough times, you do have a rhythmic and muscle memory of it in your lips and other facial muscles.

Several great things about this interview, which is well worth the read. But the best thing to me: all of the reporters, and the candidate (@sarithaforny), revealed the massive amount of detail that goes into contemplating the AG's office. The interview is great for educational purposes alone, because it gives so many good jumping off points. I will definitely be using it in future classes.

Strong agree: "So what’s missing? In my mind, we must step up our education of students, leaders, voters, and more on how manufacturing and industry are at the center of productive societies. Modern manufacturing creates the middle class that many people lament has gone missing in American society. We must improve New York State’s poor reputation amongst the business community in our country. We need to make the region a good place to do business." New York State has massive incumbent and natural advantages, and better governance would allow us to compound them.

I'd say the first thing to clear up is the claim that I "only vote for dems" (https://t.co/9IO8Tx9o5o). In the same thread where I clarify that I am voting for Governor Hochul, I also say that I am voting for @sarithaforny for AG (a Republican). Almost the entire rest of my down-ballot is either non-competitive, or the available options (especially judges) are endorsed by both the Democratic and Republican parties. The fair description of my voting this cycle is "Governor Hochul is the only candidate with (1) the Democratic nomination, and (2) no Republican/Conservative nominations, that Daniel is voting for." That is not the behavior of a Democratic partisan in New York. Regarding the name "maximum." It comes from the philosophy of the group, which is New York Maximalism. Per the announcement post: "New York Maximalism. By all rights, New York should be a state of 30 million, rather than 20 million. And New York City should be a city of 12 million, rather than 8.5 million. If the city and state were governed to a level that matched the state’s natural and incumbent advantages, it would provide so much opportunity that this vastly increased population would have a higher standard of living than we do today. A well-governed New York is a healthily growing New York." Now: I realize that some people don't like the name. Many others do, including me and the others who are joining. And it catches people's attention, even as some people don't get where it comes from. I like that particular combination. Next: the idea of whether, when, and how someone can vote for another party is as old as the party system. The question gets trickier if you're a leader of a party, and you want to vote for someone who isn't in your party. My position: doing this sometimes (but not most of the time) is fine, and it happens all the time. It is a regular part of the American system. Even this cycle we see people, including well-known party members, crossing the aisle. Here are some prominent Republicans voting for Georgia Democratic Senate candidate Ossoff (https://t.co/mKF4Zu3Y77), and here are some prominent Democrats voting for Michigan Republican Senate candidate Rogers (https://t.co/AcDEE2VV2y). This kind of thing is common currently and historically. Finally: I am a Republican with a specific set of views, fundamentally anchored in the politics, legal system, and context of New York City and State first. I do not think it is bad or remotely unprecedented for me to vote for one Democrat (as laid out in the first paragraph) as I seek to get more Republicans like me to run for office in the years ahead, and support them in that endeavor. In 1981, the New York Republican Party's mayoral nominee was Ed Koch, who was also the Democratic nominee (https://t.co/jXH3sSkdmC). The Republicans were divided, but the majority sided with placing Koch on their ballot line over backing their own prospective candidate. New York specifically has a long tradition of cross-partisan activity, including from party leaders, and that is the political context in which Maximum Republicans are growing. Whether this project is viable comes down to a technically specific view of New York City and State politics, and on that front I am convinced it is working, and will continue to work (of course).

β€œMaximum or MAGA?” My goal is for this to be a go-to question when someone says they’re a Republican in New York City. Not to pick fights in the first instance, but to identify. For example, you can be a progressive or a moderate Democrat. And there is a new kind of Republican on the scene now.
