One of the real gifts of living in NYC is that you can easily have far more than 3 good friends who live near enough to you to swoop in on a night you really want company Most of us have a handful of go-to’s, people we see all the time, often multiple times a week. It’s rare that none of them are available, because being with each other doesn’t really feel like being “out,” or “socializing.” I have a couple of friends I use the inside-of-my-brain voice with; rarely do I need an entire day of fully solo time sans-them, though I often need days without group activities But you branch out past the go-to’s and there’s dozens of other people you could hit up, who you quite like. You need to give them probably a full-day heads up, or a morning text for evening plans, though you could get lucky with a spontaneous hang. The trickiest thing is that if you’re truly just hitting them up to [fill them in about smth you’ve never mentioned before so you can vent], they’ll feel used, cause you’re using them! If what you want though is 1) a friendly face, 2) warmth and compassion, and 3) a reason to dress better & put on a brave face, you can almost always find somebody. S/o to Fractal for enabling this to a huge degree — it anchored our scene here & made it easier for friends from afar to relocate here. The abundance of our social lives almost feels utopian compared to descriptions like this, frankly.

I’m having one of those occasional (but not always rare) moments where i feel rly rly lucky just to be me right now, exactly where i am. Some eras are mostly painful and others are so Good you genuinely can’t believe it’s happening, which means you can’t admit it’s actually as good as it is, which is the same thing as not savoring it, and what is the POINT of living so well if you can’t soak it the fuck up while it’s happening. Of COURSE it’s going to end, you don’t know when things will change and even when it seems like it’s only going to get better for a while you also KNOW that those seasons when everything is pain are GOING to happen. There are so many people you love deeply who haven’t died yet, jobs you haven’t lost, fights you haven’t had, illnesses that haven’t progressed; when none of those are sitting right on top of my head and instead i have all that i have right now, this horizon, i feel like i should be floating, airborne. there’s things I want that haven’t happened yet but all comes in due time; I am embracing This season, thank god it’s here

I haven’t tweeted much lately. I didn’t even get a payout for a whole month, and I didn’t even notice. That’s never happened before. I usually rack up views without much thought, but I haven’t been scrolling much, haven’t been saying much, haven’t been replying (sorry). If I tried to unpack why it’d be cliche and boring and so painfully personal. Busy, tired, cant have certain people see what they’re inspiring in me, so i stay in the moment and i stay mum here. I feel less connected to this online life and it scares me how easily i detached, when it shaped so much of my irl life. I feel chained, constrained. I also feel unmoored. They can both happen at once. I’m mostly happy. I am actually quite busy and quite well. I don’t whether you should expect to see more of me soon, but it was nice to say hi, as me.

When people ask “how’s it going,” even when I don’t know them well, I’m usually pretty candid, which means sometimes I just say “not great,” “i’m pretty out of it, but getting through it,” “angry/sad/confused, but actively trying to focus on other things,” etc (as well as sometimes specific “great bc ___ just got resolved”) Frequently people look surprised & then give me a real answer in response! Even if they generically said “good/fine/getting by” they’ll then expand and say “actually I’m also kinda mad about ___,” or “I’m struggling with ___ and also trying not to ruminate.” It’s comically easy it is to pull off localized little jailbreaks. Very rarely do you get a weird look in response; you just can’t take it personally and you gotta adapt. IME it’s basically always worth a shot, with few exceptions.

Different definitions, expectations, needs — the same word/concept means different things, practically, to different people. It’s worth spelling these out. Often at a level of granularity that feels like overkill. But that’s what it means to really *know* a person: what do *they* mean when they say [clean] [chill] [efficient] [depressed] [neurotic] [etc.]

Look I had a twin bed for a year and it did honestly affect my quality of sleep. If you’re nun-like and enjoy your queen bed you’re probably sleeping like a starfish sometimes, or you subconsciously feel comfortable being curled up in an expanse and that helps you sleep deeply. Ig it could actually make 0 difference to you but you won’t know until you’ve tried it for like, 6 weeks in your own home. By month 5 I really, really felt it and when I got a full bed in my own bedroom again I was sleeping much better by night 3.

Yeah I buy this I think a related/similar thing is happening in me when I cold plunge. Recently I can sit in there arbitrarily long, like it’s comfortable, not difficult, and my heart rate has stabilized, and I’m just 🧘‍♀️ for 6 or 7 minutes in an ice bath & leave bc I just have to leave at some point, and not bc my body cant take it anymore

Nah I mean I have a unique combination of genes from my parents’ lines, and if I have a partner and we don’t have kids then the unique combinations of our genes that could be produced won’t be. If the 2-bed is in a place that’s convenient for your friends to come over multiple times a week, choose that. If it’s outta the way, you’ll end up mostly 1) going out a lot to see your friends and/or 2) flying solo in a low-stim environment, which can be good, but might not be what you want Being able to go out easily is rad. You can invite friends to get a drink/ meal with you and pop back to yours. Don’t underestimate the amount of hosting you can do in a smaller space — I’d assume a DTX 1-bed has a living space comparable to BK 2-beds that I’ve hosted dozens of pregames, small brunches, and casual hangouts in. Yeah, you can’t do big parties (unless there’s a roof or smth) but I’ve def squeezed in 15-20 people into a little living room a few times. Think carefully about the price thing though. If the 1-bed is more $$$ AND it’ll have you going out to spend more money more often then it can become a real lifestyle creep moment! Being out of the way has often costed me more though — cause if the only option to see friends for multiple hours straight is to bar-hop, you end up spending $60+ every damn time instead of $25 (going out & then retreating home with six-packs and homies). Whichever option will legit turn your house into The Spot (if that’s what you want!) is better. Think about the overall logistics. Hopefully this is helpful and not just more confusing lol
