This was disappointing to read. If the main community space for AI safety is the same one that people are feeling wary of visiting due to the bleed through of more sexual/edgy events, then this comment reads as deliberately obtuse at best. At worst this reads as “I will always prioritize expanding the sexual culture of my group over other concerns, like AI safety”

HOWEVER if EVERYONE does this (or some range of showing up 30-90 minutes in) then the host spends the first 30 minutes yo-yo-ing between relief and panic while wrapping up last minute prep and wondering if the party is a flop It’s crucial for the party ecosystem for there to be some people who show up right on time, along with the latecomers at varying stages of the evening

I don’t think this is as much of a black pill as people think. Look how much better the results are when the input/prompt is based off of someone with incredible skill in that arena. It’s a shame that the creative world has disavowed AI for the most part because they’d wipe the floor with every non-trad-creative using it. It’s similar to how the people getting the best outcomes out of vibecoding all seem to be well rounded engineers or good systems thinkers at the very least. People with a base level of skill are going to be able to access higher level results with way less effort than those without.

I posted this elsewhere but I think that viewing this as just a Slutcon issue is ignoring that it's just a focus for the larger issue that people have been discussing: that the culture of AI safety/Lghthaven is detrimentally linked to the culture of CNC orgies. I think that it's been made very clear that despite efforts being made by the latter group, a TON of issues have happened that have been harmful on an individual level as well as a movement level (for AI safety AS WELL AS cnc orgy/slutcon/bay area poly/edgy sex community perception in general) There's a tide of demand for policing behavior because the consequences of the group themselves not being able to reliably do so has been so problematic. I think there's a justifiable fear of inviting/accepting policing for policing's sake, but I think you're disregarding a lot of genuine criticism from people who care about your causes. https://t.co/atO65IC2mB

I feel like this is a common ‘smart person’ stance, and if you’re also smart it may make sense to you, since you also trust your ability to appropriately gauge road conditions and adapt as needed. The problem is for every ‘smart’ person there are like 10 average people and 20 absolute morons who will absolutely NOT reliably make the correct choices. (Also, even smart people are not operating at max levels of attentiveness 100% of the time and there are some scenarios where you likely CAN’T reliably gauge, especially in new neighborhoods, not being aware of mixed housing or schools nearby higher speed roads etc) It’s a fucking miracle we’ve developed a system where absolute incompetent idiots can be on the road and mostly not kill others with their giant hurtling death machines. I think it’s really easy to forget how wild a system that is.

I’m so sorry you had to deal with all of that. I remember hearing about your (and other women’s) experiences and feeling less bad about not following through with volunteering to be a flirt girl. I like the idea of helping people get better at interpersonal interactions! Super great goal! But not if it’s a thin veneer over a hookup event. I was talking with @anselm_io about how wonderful your Love Symposium was last year and how that sort of vibe and environment seems INFINITELY more conducive to actually productive efforts in the ‘interpersonal dynamics’ arena specifically BECAUSE it doesn’t read as a casual sex event! I wish there were more events like yours and I’m glad there are people like you not only making spaces like those, but also speaking up about the issues in other spaces.

I feel like it's been a disservice to conversations about both AI safety optics as well as around sexual norms to fixate this much on Slutcon as the MAIN issue. Slutcon would be fine in isolation if it was just another bay area kink event that primarily catered to kink/high openness circles. The goal of acclimating autistic people to flirting is rad as a concept and I considered being a flirt girl myself since breaking down interpersonal dynamics in real time is in my wheelhouse! Flirt girls have been getting hate for this and that's shit when the majority of them have volunteered because they want to help. I think the issue is the overall permeation of the cnc orgy/'rape cult' culture as the dominant and expected group that's associated with the venue and the larger groups of AI safety/bay area AI in general. People not feeling like they have a choice to participate in one without being identified as aligning with both is doing harm by preventing more people from working on AI safety during a pretty crucial time for that cause. I think that Slutcon is just a lightning rod for the issues that people already had with all of that, but fixating on it just means a lot of really valid arguments are being dismissed as just being anti-sex or neurotic, rather than viewing the broader issues more holistically.

I keep seeing this weird thing people do frequently, across published and more personal postings alike When people have already firmly decided the villain in the story, they seem completely incapable of having any insight into how they come across to someone who hasn’t already bought into the assigned villain. It’s like they lose all theory of mind and are blindsided when things aren’t parsed the way they desire. Funny when it’s a reddit AITA post, sad and embarrassing when it’s ostensibly journalism

Idk man I've been in or adjacent to a variety of poly/poly adjacent/kink communities over the years and social cache/influence is a HUGE weak point in blacklisting. This seems ESPECIALLY impactful and problematic when social movements and careers are tied into things as well. This leads to people who are known to be problematic being allowed to stay in communities for years and years as 'missing stairs' before there's enough momentum or something heinous enough happens for them to actually be banned, and until then they're just warned about via whisper networks and any new person unlucky enough not to know about them is potentially at risk.

I think Slutcon is more like a nucleation point for a lot of folks discomfort at how poly/cnc orgy culture (which is tied optically to you for reasonable reasons) seems to be the dominant Lighthaven culture and Slutcon is the most magnified form of that for people to have a visceral reaction to.

I really don't think it is! I think she's a person with multiple causes and passions that are currently in conflict with each other in a zero sum way. If she believes that AI is an existential threat to humanity, then prioritizing orgies over that is a wild thing to do. If AI safety is her primary concern but she can't NOT pursue her sex hobbies, she should divest herself of her positions in AI safety and for the good of humanity let Lighthaven be less centered around those groups and interests. She can still fund things from behind the scenes and direct resources towards it without both parts of the venn diagram needing to overlap into a circle. There are ways she can have her cake and eat it too, but this path is becoming increasingly obviously NOT one of them. It makes the whole AI safety scene look fundamentally unserious if they're unwilling to even CONSIDER being a bit more chill about their edgy sex behaviors to save the human race.

I’ve found the latter group to actually not have a coherent vision for their future wife, even if they had specific preferences in mind. Like, some of their desires would be conflicting, eg wanting someone low maintenance, but also wanting someone polished enough to be gala ready. I think some of this conflict arises when there are preferences that do make sense for them to have in a compatible partner mixed in with preferences that come from unresolved issues they need to work on in themselves, which is also unsurprising to find in the latter group. But I think the end conclusion is the same: these dudes weren’t seeing their future partners as whole people full of possibilities and carrying excitement about that.

Unless you’re seeing nude/unposed women, there’s always going to be things pushing what you see towards this aesthetic because it’s the culturally preferred one. Unironically kinda! But it scales in order of responsibility. Raid leaders, class leaders, etc, are going to have more of these skills than say, someone who just shows up on Thursdays as a very creatively specced backup dps. I think the like, 'good gamer' rate among gamers is probably the same as 'good employee' rate among workers. Someone in a top tier raid guild/someone working at a top tier competitive company are going to be better due to the required effort input to even get in those more selective positions. (save for nepo hires in each case I suppose) And people in higher roles in each will have commensurate skill levels. But there are also people whose skill ceiling (whether true capacity wise or capped by effort) is showing up and just doing their best to mostly follow orders and not fuck things up in unrecoverable ways.

Partially because of the knowledge/ability to be specific when prompting but also because that specificity can help offset the drift towards the mean/average that’s the bane of any creative work made via AI. It’s one thing if you want the most efficient and time tested code for an input box on a website; then using the best cumulative average of the whole corpus is fine and good! But for anything creative there’s a threshold where a homogenous result ends up boring rather than ‘accurate and what everyone seems to like most’ and we’ve already experienced waves of content like that and people rapidly being excited and then even more rapidly bored of it.

Like there’s clearly a demand for art that was bottlenecked by effort/time/cost, and it makes sense that effort was spent on making it possible to generate it. (Even if I have opinions on how exploitative that process was) This layer feels disgusting. The only reason for this is deception rather than any end creative result. There’s a demand for art from human artists and this is solely meant to capitalize on that with false legitimacy.

First the recipes for the component parts… Veggie juice: - Juice farmers market tomatoes and bell peppers in a 3 to 1 ratio of tomatoes to peppers till you have 700ml - Filter once through a cheesecloth Parmesan Rind infused vodka: - literally just chuck a Parmesan rind in a bottle of vodka for a month or w/e - freeze and filter Olive Oil washed vodka: - add 1/4 c of olive oil to some vodka and shake it throughout the week as it sits. I aimed for a couple times a day at least. - freeze and filter Tomato Basil Salt: Mix together - 1 part tomato powder - 1 part dried and powdered basil leaves (sieved till fine) - 2 parts salt Mix together in a large carafe: - 700ml veggie juice - 300ml of Balis (German basil soda) - 300ml of St George Basil Brandy - 300ml of Olive Oil washed vodka - 300ml Common Ground gin (basil and elderflower notes) - 200ml of Parm Vodka - 150ml of mozzarella water - 120ml of lime juice - 100ml of saline - 50ml of balsamic glaze In another carafe mix together: - 300ml of unflavored kefir - 300ml of heavy cream Pour the contents of the first carafe slowly into the second, watch it curdle in horror, and give it a stir and let sit for 30-60 mins! Filter through coffee filters twice! It’ll take about 2 days depending on how much space you have to run concurrent filters! I run 6 at a time. This batch I only filtered once and it didn’t have the clarity I wanted 🥲 (Note: do NOT switch out the coffee filters between rounds of filtering. It’s the curds that are the true filters and what you want things to bind to, not just the coffee filters!) For the garnish, rim a glass with balsamic glaze and then dip into the salt mix! Then thread half a tomato, a basil leaf, and a mozzarella pearl onto a skewer! Pour over a large ice cube, since this is a deceptively strong drink!

I’m in the camp of ‘I don’t personally have a problem with [x] but have interacted with enough people who say they do to see how it’s a problem to just ignore it’ This seems reasonable? Like, I’m not vegan but I can see why a lot of animal welfare causes are valid and should be heeded.

Been running into issues with this a lot. I’ve found that when I ask questions without research mode on, I often get an incorrect or out of date response. WITH research mode on its super field dependent on whether or not the info I want is gated, to the point where I added custom instructions to surface source gaps. This has made it clear how often the results are lacking any necessary depth. I feel like right now there are two branches: people locking out AI because they plan on building their own ‘ai search’ for their sites, or those who have no intention but still lock down their data. As more and more people use AI to filter through the ever growing mess of fake reviews/sites it’s going to be crucial to find some way for companies with actual real data to get that to people without tanking the cost on their end. The alternative is more of what she describes in this video: a whole ecosystem of competing slop, generated by the same tools that allow us to sort through mountains of slop. Which I’m sure will turn into a similar arms race like ads and adblockers have, racing to get past slop detection and feed people recommendations via their AIs.
1,900 points
Decoupling is valuable but not if you’re terminal about it, and for an issue as important as AI safety you have to recognize that the majority of people won’t be able to separate things to that degree. Nor should they in this case when people are asking to be taken extremely seriously about a movement and then behaving extremely unseriously when facing criticism.

I do wish more people were working on this. I really wanted a model trained on my work for quick concepting and iterating so I could paint the real thing once I tried a bunch of variations, but the drift towards the mean is too strong with larger datasets and doesn’t contain broad enough info with just my work to cover more than what I’ve already painted. If I want different lighting or flowers or an animal I haven’t painted, it failed.

@sevensixfive Yeah. In a similar vein: This was also disappointing. I get that if you’re a popular polarizing personality some level of this belief is healthy and necessary for your sanity but using it as a shield against all criticism is the worst thing you can do. https://t.co/Qy7CbjKIbq

But some portion of people on the internet ideally get converted to attendees, and making sure you’re getting the right sort of attendees for the culture you want to build seems especially important for an event that relies so heavily on interaction and participation. If some portion (I’ve met a few attendees of this mindset) see the tongue in cheek marketing as a thin veil over “this is a hookup convention” rather than a cute bit that’s going to make the perception into a self fulfilling prophecy. I do think calling it flirtcon is much better, and I overall think that the goals of helping people get a better handle on processes like that is wholesome, there’s just been some very cursed ‘if you have criticisms you’re a prude and we don’t need you’ discourse around all this. Thanks for engaging more wholesomely. 🙏

It’s NOT roughly the same amount of exposed arm displayed and NOT in the same way. I am a rolled sleeve evangelist. A rolled sleeve rolled to either the forearm 3/4 sleeve point or even the elbow give a silhouette of compressed fabric around the widest visible part of the arm. A short sleeved shirt floats away from the bicep at the visible widest part of the arm, which can also be a nice look but they are definitely not displaying the same amount of arm nor framing it in the same way. There’s a lot more to it than a story being told, it’s very different visual framing!

I always feel slightly odd as an artist because I think I’m both? I think part of it is that growing up in a family of working artists mean that art was lovely and creative but it could rarely just be full-whimsy/‘only do art when the spirit takes you’ vibes, you also had to be methodical and good with the business side of things because your family needs to eat and keep a roof over their heads. But also hella nerdy autism spreadsheet genes run in our family so there’s clearly a predisposition for that sort of thinking as well. Neither aspect feels stronger or weaker than the other; both are core identity components for me. Guess the Pepper line is just a hybrid class?

I think there are plenty of men who could benefit from a frame where people can pause them mid convo when they do something particularly offputting or particularly successful. Feedback is usually opaque in normal dating in that you either get a number/follow up date, or don’t and don’t get any specific insight into why.
1,400 points
@EducatedHarlot I think that’d probably be a central focus but there are a ton of adjacent concerns that tie in well with that cause. You see those focuses also at Lighthaven as well as other rat spaces and general conference/gathering spaces around town.

I might get roasted for this but everything mentioned is something that humans regularly fail at. I don’t think AI can currently replace the best operators, or the top equivalent in any field really. What it can usually* do reasonably successfully is make sure no one gets the worst possible experience. It raises the floor. What I’d love to see is (for this and any other profession where the argument is for human excellence being necessary and non negotiable) is how many people realistically get access to that vs average vs poor results, and also whether AI raises the floor enough to make it worth the potential loss of access to that top slice of excellence.

I feel like people have reasonable protests about ability grouping when ability can vary so much and be asymmetrical to emotional ability. Placing a 7 year old with a bunch of 15 year olds (or visa versa) is gonna be weird and challenging as they’re in dramatically different physiological stages. I’ve known folks who took classes with people older than them and it seems like a really mixed bag. Sometimes it was lovely and they got mentored, other times there was bullying/exclusion, and other times they encountered things not super appropriate for their age. I think we’re at a point where people can grow up in their physical/emotional peer groups while having their academic needs tailored to them specifically.

(Also the high profile means I can’t run it under my coffee table or pc chair legs, which is also an impediment to switching over) Are there any plans for a self emptying model on the horizon? 🙏
1,100 points
I completely agree that a movement needs high decoupling weirdos who aren’t phased by what people think to push novel ideas! I have two disagreements. A) I think the gay rights parallels are kinda in poor taste. CNC orgies are a kink, not an orientation. I can see pushing for poly culture to be more accepted and I think that has legs, but adding CNC orgies on the coattails of that is like if people were pushing for gloryholes to be accepted on the same level as gay rights. It’s again one of those things that makes the whole thing feel fundamentally unserious. B) I think that requiring people be on board with these niche interests or at the bare minimum be okay with being associated with them is a huge issue for a lot of folks who would otherwise love to be a part of AI safety specifically and the Bay Area rat community generally. There’s already been schisms from these same issues leading people to identify as rat/post-rat adjacent to avoid the associations of the former. I think you’re right that a new community needs to happen and this current discomfort is showing how much it’s needed. But I think it makes sense for people to express their displeasure that they have to basically build and fund a new Lighthaven if they want to help with AI safety during a fast moving and crucial time in AI development but don’t want to be associated with rape orgies. I don’t think it’s unfair to say it’s hindering the movement to have to do so rather than the current community just admitting and accounting for how offputting most people find those associations.

Which is understandable when we still live in an era where it’s a common sight during holidays in many families for men to sit around and drink while women do all the prep work. Millenials are like 1 generation removed from the era of women being able to have their own bank accounts for the first time without a father or husband’s permission. There are a lot of entrenched social dynamics and behaviors to work through that’ll probably take more than one generation to fix. We just all happen to be alive in a time where there’s been a massive dynamic change that shifted a ton of social pressure levers and things haven’t found a good equilibrium yet.
1,100 points
I think this is really difficult to measure without getting pretty granular with it because of how social norms shift over time. I think probably a disappointingly small number would qualify as ‘good’ by modern day standards but that’s also because things like corporal punishment and women not being able to own property or have bank accounts, etc were the norm. I think it’s always been a tradeoff. Back in the day, the quality of life a woman could expect while unpartnered was pretty limited and grim, so it was worth it to put up with a lot more negatives from men. I don’t think men have adapted/adjusted/risen to the occasion as fast as opportunities have opened up for women to have fulfilling lives without having to tolerate partners with more negative aspects than they desire.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I super appreciate it! And I hadn’t considered the vantage point issue! That’s a new one to me! For your other notes: - Building a vacuum that reduces how often I have to empty the vacuum by a factor of like 10 and opens full automation just feels like factorio vibes to me, so it registers as the opposite of inelegant! - Noise for auto emptying definitely is jarring but my cats eventually adapted to the sound of the roomba and switchbot models I have! (Switchbot emptying sound is way quieter tbh) I feel like in this day and age it’d also be possible to have an app based ‘quiet time’ kill switch to pause all automations if a baby is napping, there’s a meeting, etc. - Agree about the styling and space. Switchbot again beats roomba for this one. I have to empty it a bit more often but it’s still like a factor of 10x less than if I had to empty every cycle, so it still unlocks automation for me. I did end up having to build a unit to fit the roomba auto emptying tower specifically but the switchbot just lives under a side table. - Dirty water issue, agree. I’m considering upgrading to the switchbot model with the upgraded dock that you hook up to a waterline for auto emptying/refilling as that would solve that issue nicely. - I do appreciate the simplicity of a single bag system but yeah, if it negates my ability to automate it’s just a killer for me. - the brush head being able to reach ‘visible surfaces’ kills me. If it can only reach 2 inches under a chair or coffee table, then dust just piles up past the areas it can reach since most coffee tables etc are deeper than that. It becomes extremely obvious when you’re sitting on a chair a little further away and you can see exactly where the dust border begins under various furniture. (And then my cats drag it back out when they play under there) - agree with the different rug depth issues. Where switchbot beats out roomba in some categories this is where roomba beats switchbot for me and I have it on the level of the house with a more complicated rug. (3 story house…I’ve had to accumulate a few vacuums and test a bunch as you can see 🥲 IF YOU EVER BUILD ONE THAT CAN HANDLE STAIRS I will be INSTANTLY sold; disregard all my other feature requests 😂) Anyways, it seems like some of my feature requests would be solveable but some are just differences in which goals you’ve prioritized. I really like a lot of facets of what you’re going for though! I hope either you guys make a parallel model for folks like me or another privacy first/machine learning company ends up filling the market position for people with my goals 🥲

@creebeauvoir @ohabryka @Liv_Boeree I keep hearing this from folks. And also the inverse, that folks have attended events there and then when telling people they attended had people go "Oh? So uh...you're into [x]?" and being baffled and having to explain they're just into AI.
900 points
@GreysonSofia Exactly! 😎❤️
900 points
That’s another portion of it. Another portion is association with the reports of SA/abuse/harassment. Another portion is association with orgies/kink in general. Generally people want to be able to be involved in AI safety research without having all those associations automatically applied to them. More specifically, women attending events don’t want to have to be on guard against the extra layers of social/sexual dynamics that have been normalized, or risk even worse.
900 points
I do have a lot of complaints in that regard tbh. I was super disappointed to not be able to get useful lighting refs out of it. It has the same issue of drifting to the mean for that as well. But I do find that it's good for doing a bunch of mockups of compositions and rough lighting at least if I'm explicit when describing what I want. It's still way faster to iterate on different lighting/composition/color combos of a sketch/mockup I make than doing them myself, especially if I'm working with traditional media vs digital. I've also been able to vibecode a bunch of tools that help my processes and the unfun tedious parts of pro art. I think in an era where free time/energy is so valuable, finding ways to save it where I can and use it for the actually meaningful creative parts feels very useful and important for me.
900 points
Doing a bunch of test paintings and mockups to decide on a composition. There are plenty of times where I realize that just sketching the composition didn't fully show me how things look with more light and color, and I really hate the process of repainting and redrawing the same thing to make small adjustments. Ideally I want something where I can iterate on a concept early on in the process and see how different color choices/composition/light/shadow/pose impact the final result and then dive into painting it. I do that sometimes manually for commissions or larger/serious pieces but it's not a part of art that I truly enjoy. I can't visualize things in my head so I have to get things down on paper to see how they work fully, and the inefficiencies that introduces interrupt the fun parts of the artistic process for me.
900 points
If you think this is ‘all the job’ you have a significant misunderstanding of what else goes into animation. That the end result has a look you don’t personally like doesn’t negate the fact that it COULD if the original artist loaded the prompt with different terms than what the OP did.

I think it’s similar to the artisanalization of other industries. Hand carved chairs aren’t gone but the economic and effort pressures make it so only people who really care to learn to be good at it/charge a fortune can make a living doing it, and similarly, only people who care about a chair being hand carved will pay the high ticket price for that level of detail/quality/customization.

Idk I feel like as an artist, being able to sometimes iterate and remove some of the more boring parts ensures I still have creative drive/motivation to finish a painting rather than expending my energy on the parts I find less fun. I think it helps me access more results than if I was doing it all myself.
900 points
Genuinely yeah I think that’s part of it. And yeah agree with overall quality loss in journalism, but I feel like I’m also seeing this more on Reddit (and the broader social media sphere in more short form/video form) and personal posts as well? Just overall less theory of mind I guess and more propensity for proceeding as if the hero character is unassailable and the villain is automatically hated in any setting.

@JungleSilicon See, that would be novel and lovely. I could use that! But yeah, current incarnation is cursed instead. 🥲

Yeah, realistically I’m in favor of strict limits in places where there’s pedestrian traffic/kids/etc, and more flexible/flow of traffic (within reason) for others. I’m sure it’s possible to automate with flexibility in mind and not just blanket ticket everyone going 1mph over the limit.

@AriZerner Falafel! The first time I tried gardening as an adult I planted like 20 parsley seeds assuming I would make some mistakes and a ton would die. They all lived. I had SO MUCH PARSLEY. And then so much falafel ❤️

Yeah, or desires that relate to how they WANT to be/see themselves but haven’t put in the effort to become yet, that’s a big one. - Guy had a vision of running businesses with his wife - would never follow through with anything though - so his gf would have to nag him, which he hated - broke up with her and then got with a super passive girl - girl didn’t have entrepreneurial drive - broke up with her, too for a more type A girl Unsure if he’s still trapped in that cycle or whether he took steps to grow 🤷♀️

You’re taking this to the extreme. Using assistants to mass produce art is different than having understudies working on a piece with direction. And what about lauded classical masters that did so? That was the main art production standard for like half a century’s worth of art that fills most of our museums
800 points
@DragonifyDev @thewhowhatwhy Do you mean this literally or colloquially? I need to know whether there's any point in engaging
800 points
The tween grunt pipeline to senior animator mostly dissolved ages ago. Get mad at capitalism for that, not AI. Tools like this could enable animators to increase their own skill faster by improving their keyframe skills rather than spending all their time on tweens, which is a huge boon for both artistry and reaching mastery. The ability to iterate faster in a traditionally super time consuming art is incredible.
800 points
The amount of time that’s been done is almost never for animation. Disney and Ghibli are the studios that have historically put this level of care and mastery into traditional animation and by 1914 Disney had already shifted to the lead animators only doing the keyframes and rough animations and leaving the tweening to assistants/lower roles. Ghibli used their structure when they started. There would be no beautiful traditionally animated classics if we kept the work relegated solely to masters. We’d probably have a few short clips eventually, like you see with people doing their final projects or passion projects for animation studies.
800 points
@sonikudzu That’s valid. I do think it’s important for people to push back against things like that rather than a blanket “Well why even have speed limits at all, we can all be trusted to be reasonable and diligent!”

I wish there was a way to put a video game experience into movie format easily (while retaining the feeling of progress and discovery and uncovering mystery) so I could just make everyone watch Horizon Zero Dawn. I played through it again in story difficulty for a couple of days to show Anselm the plot and lore and that was neat but still a time investment that’d be a deterrent for most.
800 points
Done by humans or robots? Having a hard time imagining the latter but that’s primarily what I’m talking about. There are plenty of bathhouse offerings for humans to bathe other humans, or care nurses for the elderly. Having it done by robots rather than humans could take away some of the shame surrounding it for people who NEED the assistance vs enjoying it as a luxury.

Also I know inflation is brutal but I think it’s pretty reasonable for a party where you don’t do any of the food prep or decor prep to be pricy. Like, a box of cake mix and some bulk soda is fine and most of the rest is somewhat adult-standards-creep rather than what will be remembered by kids?
800 points
@paularambles I love this so much
800 points
The other issue is that the only way to do this in a way where it isn’t the vibe of the photo itself being rated is if it gets standardized the way they do for model shots or passport photos. White background, white tank top, neutral lighting, head and torso in frame, facing forward, maybe one smiling and one non smiling shot, etc. AI could make an effort doing this but it doesn’t do faces well enough yet for it to be accurate enough for an attractiveness quiz.
800 points
An example I have is dating someone who came from poverty and ended up in elite circles, who was SUPER insecure about any hints of ‘low class’ behavior in himself. The closer you get when you’re dating someone with porous boundaries/interpersonal issues (or maybe in general?) the more they view you as an extension of themselves. So over time, behaviors of mine that were initially fine became triggers for that ‘low class’ fear. Like, revealing to other people (when asked a related question) that I hadn’t traveled to Europe as a kid was an issue for him that he ended up getting angsty at me about. I’ve experienced similar issues with people with people pleasing behavior (rooted in shame and insecurity) and being upset that I won’t reflect back the same martyring behavior for them or people they feel they need to sacrifice for. If people can’t address their shame in a healthy way, they ignore it and pretend it’s normal and rational and then they start treating anyone that gets too close to them as if they should also follow those standards.

700 points
The issue is that the policing is applied asymmetrically and to people who have experiences in them where no consequences happen, that feels -worse- than a random event at a bar. And it really is, because in a place that has all these systems and protocols for keeping people safe it’s a choice rather than an accident when they aren’t applied.
700 points
A) Tolerating is one thing and I'm wholly in favor of that! Requiring it be the dominant culture of a group (when being part of said group means being assumed to endorse its culture) and this being a group that ostensibly desires to grow for the goal of saving humanity is a far cry from tolerance. Also grindr and bathhouses were tolerated, not made the main office culture of GLAAD. And one of the biggest shifts in the tide preceding the victory was when the dominant messaging changed to love/family/marriage rights. Again, that’s why this comparison feels wild/inaccurate. The gay rights movement had one goal. If we’re arguing for the goal of normalizing poly/cnc culture then I think they’re not doing a great job convincing normies, but I can see where they’re coming from and it’s working for their circles which are primarily who they want anyways. The issue is there are parallel goals being pursued and one is directly limiting and hindering the other, which is VERY different from the gay rights movement. B) I agree rats should tolerate weirdos. Most of us are weird in some way! Tolerance is instrumental, it exists to protect open inquiry. BUT it isn't or shouldn't be a terminal value that means every edge case gets to be flagship programming at the shared infrastructure. (also paradox of tolerance etc etc) Is there any event Lighthaven could host where you'd say the cost to the AI safety mission outweighs the value? If there is, we basically agree on the principle and are just arguing about where we’d each respectively choose to draw the line on that.
700 points
Also one point I forgot: I was responding with ‘hinging it on a single person’ to your response calling one person out and saying how there have been no repercussions. I’ve heard from multiple men and women who resent or refuse to go to Lighthaven out of professional worries or actual safety concerns. That’s a loss for AI safety.

@TheMoodyTrues I can push back against the negative aspects while not disregarding the benefits the overall progress of AI brings. No ethical consumption under capitalism etc etc.
700 points
I completely agree with you on this point. The way AI has been trained has been a deeply exploitative process. But it's here and doesn't seem to be going anywhere so why would I ignore something I can make use of? As a professional artist it allows me to keep to the parts of the process I actually enjoy.
700 points
"Genuine, intimate expression is fundamentally incompatible with delegation." Do you disavow all the painters and sculptors and other assorted artists who delegate a lot of work on their pieces to their understudies? Does it no longer become their expression because someone else helped with the labor?
700 points
I do agree that while AI is an absolutely magical advancement for humanity, the process to get there was done in the most exploitative and dehumanizing way possible. But this is where we are now, and idk man. I would rather not be an aging oil-lamp craftsman getting pissed of every time I turn on my electric lights at night. I'd rather use the ease of access to light to my benefit and find ways for it to enable me instead.
700 points
@Dayman67890 Idk man as an artist and as someone who did animation for 6 years, I can tell you there are plenty points in the process I do not enjoy that feel like time sinks and impediments preventing me from getting to the parts I DO enjoy.
700 points
1) We have all the info for people to grow their own wheat, mill their own flour, and bake their own bread, but outside of a handful of artisans it doesn’t make sense for most people to do that. It’s an economic but also availability and convenience based choice. 2) I don’t entirely disagree that there need to be regulations, like with any technology, but I have a feeling our ideas on what would work best would differ. 3) yes, and getting to readily and easily see the effects of each means you can learn far faster and understand the impact of each more intuitively. 4) we’re not talking about simple interpolation, otherwise yes, I’d agree with you.
700 points
1) Curious how you think it’ll be repaired when it’s been long trending the other direction outside of small indie productions and passion projects. 2) I think addressing capitalist pressures on the arts is a more realistic avenue than halting technological progress. 3) literally no lol. Anything you can learn from tweening you can learn faster exploring with automation, similar to 3d animation or flash where you can have sliders to control easing etc. 4) Yes? You would be? If you tween a series of keyframes with AI and see what’s off in 5 mins rather than spending days animating it, you get to correct your keyframes and try again faster.
700 points
@IAMROLLES I say this as someone who took animation classes at two different schools for 6 years and never continued because I was never patient enough to do tweening. I hated it. AI has rejuvenated my interest in motion arts!
700 points
The thing is that can’t get the results you want, it has to have data from somewhere else to fill in the gaps, but that data is also what makes it drift to the mean. If they were developing for artists first there would be sliders for style/anatomy/movement/color/etc to be able to control the weighting of those. Some image prompts have similar features but nothing that really works as well as it needs to or with that sort of depth.

I think if you have a baseline capacity to follow rules/best practices that smarter people have set, sure. That’s literally what I mean when I say it’s impressive that we’ve developed a mostly safe system where even pretty incompetent people can drive without harmful consequences to others. The problem is when people think they’re smarter than the rules and are deeply incorrect about that assessment.

Because it’s one thing to know something isn’t your jam, but entirely another thing to make hating on it part of your personal identity. It’s fine to have criticisms of it, or know you wouldn’t enjoy it, but the way some people take PRIDE in distancing themselves from it by disdainfully hating on it is weird and performative. It doesn’t make you cooler or better than the burning man evangelists to hate burning man.

Some people like this guy being like “ai isn’t a threat because it’s just doing exactly what they say so they must have just not told it not to hack people/told it to hack people/this is all a human problem actually” and disregarding that an AI that can hack people if you don’t explicitly tell it not to OR IF YOU TELL IT TO is explicitly a risk. Then other people being like “ai is a bubble and it’s about to burst! That’s why they’re doing the slowdown, because they know it’s not going anywhere” in one breath and then “ai swarms are going to kill us all and these idiot companies aren’t stopping it!!” in the next. Again I think trying to finagle a percentage value for “good men” from this is nonviable. In any era you’ll be getting a percentage of “what men women will consent to be in a relationship with” and I’m sure SOME portion of that will be truly good men but certainly not all, and folks standards for ‘good men’ will vary wildly. Would you define a man who can provide a far above average lifestyle for his wife and kids and is well loved by all his friends and family (wife and kids included) but is a functional alcoholic and largely relies on his wife to pick up the slack when his functionality ebbs a good man? Do all the good facets outweigh the bad weight of the addiction? Probably for some it would and for others it wouldn’t.

I've spent my whole life growing my art skills, and it's a lot to see a massive dynamic shift like this wipe a lot of that relevance/value out. I think it's really important to recognize whether you're going to continue trying to pursue something professionally, and if so, where you can still bring value and to find that niche. It's not going to be easy as more and more industries become artisanilized, but some truly passionate people will find their places.

Idk man as an artist and as someone who did animation for 6 years, I can tell you there are plenty points in the process I do not enjoy that feel like time sinks and impediments preventing me from getting to the parts I DO enjoy. In all my animation courses there were maybe 2 people who actually enjoyed the methodical tedium of doing tweening.

@PixelPusher1974 People still hand carve chairs and make bobbin lace despite mass manufacturing existing. The people who really care about a craft have infinitely more resources to learn and experiment than in any other era.

Well no. I think there's a fair amount of well earned hate. I think that AI is an absolutely magical advancement for humanity but the process to get there was done in the most exploitative and dehumanizing way possible. Zero compensation for any artists whose art was ingested while the companies that stole it make millions to billions is pretty fucked up any way you look at it. And that's before you take into account the income hit and job loss creatives have seen. I'm sure there are individuals here and there whose primary hate for AI is resentment, but it's by no means the legitimate majority.

1) you’re being obtuse if you think that was my point. Replace artisanal bread proceasing with harvesting wood to hand carve ornate millwork around doorframes. 3/4) we’re talking past each other. I believe you can get that knowledge out of seeing the end animation results, seeing what’s wrong about them, and then having the opportunity to adjust and correct them, test the animation again, and repeat.

Unless you have a massive corpus to train on, there are going to be gaps and it can’t make anything you haven’t specifically drawn, so it gets repetitive. Say I wanted to do some composition mockups for a commission of someone and their pet platypus. I’ve never painted a platypus, so it wouldn’t be able to do that if just trained on my work.
500 points
@MisterFireTango @InterspeciesFa1 How do you get the math itself for things not in your art corpus? Or without enough in your corpus to cover different possibilities to train on?
500 points
@ben_greer Wdym they look like what the animator drew?
500 points
Maybe, but in all of those cases advancements for the convenience of the masses unlocked things that experts were able to leverage to make incredible things. Great fashion houses have used the distinct properties of synthetic fabrics to make gorgeous groundbreaking things, and tv dinners have come a long way from where they started and the split off into healthy meal prep is something I see a lot of lovely chefs using, even if you don’t mention advancements in freezing/dehydrating and what that’s done for molecular gastronomy style cooking! I’m excited to see what brilliant creative minds do with the tools general AI advancement has brought us.

The cycle that I see in more rural areas where cars are necessary for basic living/having a job is that people can commit multiple infractions without losing their license because people are (somewhat reasonably) reticent to take away that functionality and give them no way to rebuild their life, essentially. This leads to predictable things like someone getting their 6th dui and then killing someone. Hopefully self driving cars will be able to bridge that issue and we can remove driving from the equation for some people, period.

It’s easy to avoid when going parallel or perpendicular, the issue is the funky angle you get into when navigating on or off of angled streets that require you to do a super fun swoop and weave maneuver to stay perpendicular to them. I tried nail and washi tape. I tried the edge cure method where you do a clear coat and then flash cure the final coat color but I had a problem with the clear coat lifting and tearing with the tape when pulled away and some of the edges of the square were jagged and I had to repaint them 🥲 My next attempt is gonna be to just do two horizontal clean lines, and then two vertical clean lines, cured in between, so I have less of a chance to lose the crisp corners!

in grad school i used to compulsively download interesting-sounding textbooks from libgen and sort them by subject in calibre. read almost none of them. it flattens the incentive landscape in a weird way to have invisible digital access to everything. very unnatural. the human animal yearns to come across a book organically by combing through the shelves of a library or bookstore and being struck by the physicality of its cover like our ancestors foraging through the bush for delicious treats

this is a very sobering read. main thesis is in section 5: > Our conjecture is that a modern society makes the third child expensive and childlessness cheap, even when GDP per capita is only a fraction of the frontier (i.e., the U.S. level). Children are expensive because a child must be equipped to function in a world of formal knowledge and credentials, which takes years of costly investment (Restuccia and Vandenbroucke, 2013, Doepke and Zilibotti, 2019). At the same time, children are no longer productive in the household, not even for smaller chores, having been replaced by “engines of liberation” such as the electric appliances now available even to poor households (this idea extends the intuition in Greenwood et al., 2005). Modernity also imposes tight career schedules, set by large-scale organizations, that collide with the biological clock and with the kin networks that used to share the work of raising children (Adda et al., 2017, Compton and Pollak, 2014). And modernity makes childlessness cheap, because an impersonal society imposes next to no penalty on those who have no children: pensions and health care do the work that sons and daughters once did (Boldrin et al., 2015), and lineage counts for little. > Goldin (2026) pushes this line further with an argument about a growing mismatch between genders. Modernity also changes gender roles unevenly. Women’s opportunities expand rapidly through education, work, and greater independence, while expectations about housework and childcare often change more slowly (Goldin and Katz, 2002, Goldin, 2021). This is particularly true as economies shift toward services, where women’s comparative advantages are better rewarded (Ngai and Petrongolo, 2017). The mismatch operates at both the extensive and the 18 intensive margins: more women remain childless, and mothers have fewer children on average. > This argument is attractive because it explains why East Asia and now Latin America have such low TFRs. These are the societies where the gender mismatch is largest.19 It also suggests an intriguing possibility: societies with highly unbalanced gender norms start with very high TFRs, as men impose their preferences (Ashraf et al., 2014), and end with very low ones, as women resist (Doepke and Kindermann, 2019, Doepke and Tertilt, 2018). A paradoxical reversal of demographic fortunes. ... > In short, modernity in its current form seems largely incompatible with replacement-level fertility.

if you believe this you are going to own yourself for no reason. that is not what people mean by "oversharing." let me say it in the most autistic way possible: oversharing is when you have not established common knowledge that the other person wants to participate in the computation you are attempting to enroll them into participating in. it is a failure to understand basic human protocols for establishing trust, rapport, and common ground. the message you are communicating when you overshare is "i do not understand how relationships develop gradually over time as we mutually discern how much and in what ways we can and want to trust and rely on each other"

In my view we have a few different tiers of verifiability 1) programatically verifiable (near-free) - games, coding, math, cybersecurity, chip design 2) real-world verifiable (cost-or time bounded) - sciences: biology, chemistry, physics -physical world: material science, energy, aerospace, robotics, agriculture, pharma -forecasting: trading, weather 3) verifiable with human preference - writing, design, comedy, charisma, persuasion I expect most low-hanging fruit in (1) to be solved very quickly. Not sure how much longer before more solved math conjectures are simply uninteresting. I’m least certain about chip design being in this category, perhaps we hit a ceiling and require physics or materials breakthroughs to continue progress. My guess is we will quickly run into the limits of how well we can simulate each domain in (2). The time-bounded nature of real world verification may be the reason we don’t hit fast takeoff. Sim2real remains an elusive problem to solve when real-world data is limited. Part of the reason I don’t expect to live multiple hundreds of years is simply that I expect pharmaceutical progress to be time-bounded by the physical world. I expect the items in (3) to never really get solved to a superhuman degree, as success relies on an ever-shifting plane of cultural preference. People adapted to “good” AI writing and became annoyed at new stylistic tics that, in a vacuum, are not necessarily bad.
