My current biggest struggle, for example: last night I "missed my sleeping window". So I knew I was gonna sleep bad and wake up feeling bad. Lo and behold, that happened. BUT, because of meditation, my baseline valence is pretty high. And I saw, as I was falling asleep, my mind fighting it: "NO, I'M SUPPOSED TO FEEL BAD!" so, weirdly, there's a self-fulfilling prophecy thing going on where I want to be right about my predictions MORE THAN I want to feel good. And I recognize ALL of this, and that it's irrational, and that the "rational" thing would be to just make a prediction and then "drop it" or even "max try to falsify it" since it's not a nice one, lol, but I can't. Not "from the inside".

There is a (legit) theory of decision-making that focuses on min(regret). But there is a pathological version (perhaps all mental illnesses are like that? Rational given twisted axioms?) that tries to make regret ZERO. So, what are we talking about here? Basically two days ago I had some Challenging Experiences with someone which made me Sad. I tried to deal with them and mostly failed. I then woke up middle of the night, at 2:30 AM and was "processing them" (feeling into them as I gained courage to) until ~6:00 AM. By the end I felt quite differently. The next day I saw the same person but mostly no reaction arose. Their behavior is their task, my reaction is mine. Same evening I gave a speech, again mostly nothing arose, heart sped up for a bit and quickly returned to normal. Later that night went out dancing and gf noted how my movements were very "loose", "lacking tension" where they're usually more "staccato" and "sharp".

Being "high agency" seems to presuppose that agency is a unitary personality characteristic but that doesn't seem to be the case to me? Like, how agency usually gets defined it seems to me a rehash of Samo Burja's "Live vs Dead Players" (can you think/do new things or merely imitate) or even "thinking from first principles (can you investigate mechanisms or merely imitate). Like, I was at Ye's concert in the Algarve right and it was really poorly organized. I was in a line of Ye knows how many cars that didn't move for 40 minutes. I got out of the car, told everyone behind me to back up and turn the car around go over the sidewalk and exit from the back and they did and it worked. Those who were ahead of me are probably still there. Now, was that a "high agency" move? I mean — sure. But I feel particularly empowered to take charge in situations like these, for some reason (Portugal) they keep happening, it worked once, and each further success heightens my confidence. So am I "high agency" tout court? Idk man, last year I was randomly (spiritual path[?]) afraid of taking planes? Like it just feels like a faulty abstraction. Here Roger is talking about the foolishness (my words, not his) of comparing moments. Increasingly I experience the same comparing *people*. When you're young, sure, you have no concepts, no insight, you see very few dimensions so it seems possible to compare people, or even think one is strictly superior to another or to plot them (!) or make plus-and-minuses lists of them comparing them (!!). But, as I've grown, I've found this impossible. Everyone is incredibly unique. Not just their personality but even — and this is why I link this video — their faces: it's getting impossible to say someone is "beautiful" or "ugly" or like… That is far from the first thing noticed, the first thing I notice is just how INCREDIBLY INSANELY MIND-BLOWINGLY unique each and every single face is. Talking to gf today and I came up with a “locally optimal” (TM) theory of meditation. Check this out: the other day I was washing potatoes or smth (ik ik europoor). Anyways the point is this: A NICK before I had no thoughts. I was engaged in something, but without any thoughts. Now that I was doing smth that isn’t really engaging thoughts start “booting up”. I had noticed this before: in a jhourney retreat I was inside and my awareness was about the size of the ceiling. I moved outside and immediately (a very engaging) thought started. And I got this distinct feeling that its “functional role” was only to keep my awareness about as curtailed as it was. (That noticing, that insight, led to a huge shift that felt like “dying while still alive”.) So why am I saying this? Well because meditation is all about, or can be, ignoring your thoughts etc so you can see “what’s really there”, whatever. BUT WHERE ARE THE THOUGHTS COMING FROM? WHO IS MAKING THEM AND WHY? And, if you think about its, it’s this weird cat and mouse game you’re playing with yourself! It’s YOU!: it’s YOUR SYSTEM that is making the thoughts that then you STRUGGLE to ignore. Which gets me to the locally optimal part: what if this is… for the best? What if your system is WISE and knows that you are NOT READY for the truth? That it would break and hurt and harm you? That it’s trying to keep you out of harm’s way by making sure your awareness doesn’t expand too much? What if it’s not just (1) you but also (2) on your side? Instead of some impersonal external force you need to route around or fight against or trick? And this MAKES sense because, again, when I “saw through” it had great benefits my suffering was permanently curtailed etc but also it felt like DYING WHILE STILL ALIVE. It was not pleasant. It was, in fact, the worst I’ve ever felt. So, if I’m right then the whole game should be, instead of trying to settle down the mind or ignore thoughts or this and that to understand that the current level of thought-having probably locally optimal. It’s protecting you from something. And, thus, what you need is to show your system safety/love/nervous system capacity/that you can take it. You need to grow your SAFETY to demonstrate to the system it’s safe, you’re safe, you can take it and THEN it can let you see. Instead of fighting it ie YOURSELF. Ie ie you need EQUANIMITY before you can get ^^^ Awareness!!

So I've been doing diagrams/graphs/visualizations quite a bit recently, right? And a terrible — in the old sense — realization — which maybe I intimated with text but could then banish from my mind — a terrible realization I've had is that the audience will give you nothing, nothing, nothing. Either because they don't care to or just because they're busy or mindlessly scrolling or maybe because theory-of-mind is hard (from your side) or because hermeneutics is hard (from theirs). It doesn't matter: you just cannot assume they'll do any legwork. I look at the best diagrams/graphs/visualizations maker I know on this website — the one that made it big, the one that made bank — and what do I notice? He leaves *nothing* to the reader, absolutely nothing for the audience. Each one that he makes is perfectly finished, perfectly *total*. It's like the difference between a 99% eclipse and a 100% eclipse: that last 1% makes 99% of the difference… (This is of course terrible — in the new sense — as my strong suit it — has always been — volume: I'm a volume lifter and a volume poaster: ideas overflow out of me and I struggle to capture them all but, as it turns out, that's the 99% of work that makes 1% of the difference… So… what now? Do I pivot? Do I go from explore to exploit? Do I go from breadth-first to depth-first? Do I have the courage to move to a new skillset where rejection anew means something and might sting?)

At some mindset level you think you always have to trade-off between what you want and what others want. (This might even be true, not the point rn) I naturally lean towards others. But I got burned and so "compensated" by putting a layer of selfishness atop, so I wouldn't get burned anymore. The times when I was the most selfish is when I got the best results. This was very confusing to me, I thought being selfish was bad. And I still do sorta think it. So I eased up on it. But I always had this puzzle: why did it work so good for me to be max selfish? Turns out that people just want predictability. That they can deal with. And it sparked this hypothesis: perhaps people are terrified of emotions because, somewhere in the dynasty, for some reason, someone didn't have the skills/context/privilege necessary to process something *fast*. I've had many more crises-of-faith since becoming an atheist than I had when I was a believer: it took only one for me to deconvert, but uncountable ones after that couldn't get me to re-convert, as I was more afraid of committing intellectual suicide than I was to die. I see some people whose (re-)conversions seem to indicate that they fear dying more. I can't blame them. And yet… I understand (re-)converting just on pure faith grounds because maybe you can't meet God unless you yourself take that leap-of-faith. But people stop there: many practices say they will get you to meet God, certainly the christian contemplative tradition, but people do not, after (re-)converting invest all their hours in what they claim is now, to them, the most important thing.
