It's like an endless buffet, and even the worst downside of an occasional emotional activation when I am in strong disagreement with someone feels like a tiny cost in exchange for all the joy of enjoying people. I love feeling both resonance and foreignness with others. I appreciate people's diverse talents just as they appreciate mine. I feel so grateful for the people I am close with, what we see and appreciate in each other, our love and curiosity and enjoyment of each other. People helping me surface and see things in myself is an invaluable gift. I feel so wealthy when contemplating this area of life. Ultimately if we are all unique faces of God then I feel a reverence for God's endless multiplicity and paradoxical nature. It's fun! It's frustrating! Last night I got to articulate how we put subjective labels on others' actions. Someone expressed a lot of care for someone else along with reservations about the effects of their care. I said that that's admirably self-aware but also a bit neurotic. For the exact same actions, we might default to more charitable interpretations for people we're close to and less charitable interpretations for people we're distanced from. Maybe this is fine and it's right to have to earn others' charity. Then I get too meta and think well everyone is close with someone and so why not default towards charity with everyone until proven uncharitable? And then I open the flap and release the helium from my head and come back down to earth.
