in grad school i used to compulsively download interesting-sounding textbooks from libgen and sort them by subject in calibre. read almost none of them. it flattens the incentive landscape in a weird way to have invisible digital access to everything. very unnatural. the human animal yearns to come across a book organically by combing through the shelves of a library or bookstore and being struck by the physicality of its cover like our ancestors foraging through the bush for delicious treats

this is a very sobering read. main thesis is in section 5: > Our conjecture is that a modern society makes the third child expensive and childlessness cheap, even when GDP per capita is only a fraction of the frontier (i.e., the U.S. level). Children are expensive because a child must be equipped to function in a world of formal knowledge and credentials, which takes years of costly investment (Restuccia and Vandenbroucke, 2013, Doepke and Zilibotti, 2019). At the same time, children are no longer productive in the household, not even for smaller chores, having been replaced by “engines of liberation” such as the electric appliances now available even to poor households (this idea extends the intuition in Greenwood et al., 2005). Modernity also imposes tight career schedules, set by large-scale organizations, that collide with the biological clock and with the kin networks that used to share the work of raising children (Adda et al., 2017, Compton and Pollak, 2014). And modernity makes childlessness cheap, because an impersonal society imposes next to no penalty on those who have no children: pensions and health care do the work that sons and daughters once did (Boldrin et al., 2015), and lineage counts for little. > Goldin (2026) pushes this line further with an argument about a growing mismatch between genders. Modernity also changes gender roles unevenly. Women’s opportunities expand rapidly through education, work, and greater independence, while expectations about housework and childcare often change more slowly (Goldin and Katz, 2002, Goldin, 2021). This is particularly true as economies shift toward services, where women’s comparative advantages are better rewarded (Ngai and Petrongolo, 2017). The mismatch operates at both the extensive and the 18 intensive margins: more women remain childless, and mothers have fewer children on average. > This argument is attractive because it explains why East Asia and now Latin America have such low TFRs. These are the societies where the gender mismatch is largest.19 It also suggests an intriguing possibility: societies with highly unbalanced gender norms start with very high TFRs, as men impose their preferences (Ashraf et al., 2014), and end with very low ones, as women resist (Doepke and Kindermann, 2019, Doepke and Tertilt, 2018). A paradoxical reversal of demographic fortunes. ... > In short, modernity in its current form seems largely incompatible with replacement-level fertility.

if you believe this you are going to own yourself for no reason. that is not what people mean by "oversharing." let me say it in the most autistic way possible: oversharing is when you have not established common knowledge that the other person wants to participate in the computation you are attempting to enroll them into participating in. it is a failure to understand basic human protocols for establishing trust, rapport, and common ground. the message you are communicating when you overshare is "i do not understand how relationships develop gradually over time as we mutually discern how much and in what ways we can and want to trust and rely on each other"

oh boy are we doing discourse about the simulation argument 1. first, we have to acknowledge that this stuff sounds insane to anybody who isn't a very specific kind of nerd. just for calibration. outside view this is an insane piece of free-floating abstraction totally disconnected from reality, of which there are many 2. the main reason the simulation argument is considered respectable by a certain class of nerds is downstream of it being discussed by rationalists / EAs in the 2010s downstream of bostrom proposing it in 2003; many other insane-sounding ideas in AI and AI-adjacent discourse also have this origin, which is confusing if you don't know the lore here 3. in order for the simulation argument to work you have to buy several highly speculative untestable assumptions all of which there is plenty of room for reasonable disagreement on: assumptions about anthropic reasoning, assumptions about the feasibility of conscious simulations, assumptions about the behavior of posthumans with access to vast computational resources, etc 4. taking a different kind of outside view, namely a psychological one, you could not possibly invent a better metaphor for dissociation than the simulation argument 5. obviously part of the appeal of the simulation argument is that it's fun to think about if you do buy some of the underlying assumptions. it has this flavor of getting away with something, namely being able to discuss this extremely magical / spiritual / theological idea ("we are thoughts in the mind of god", gnosticism, and so forth) within a nominally scientific materialist atheist frame that is normally supposed to exclude such things. i have speculated previously about the extent to which rationality / AI risk / yudkowskianism / singularitarianism was fundamentally a theological project this entire time, and the simulation argument fits neatly into this 6. okay, that all having been said, what do i actually believe about the simulation argument? basically i think it's a trap for nerds and not worth thinking about. even if you buy that we're in a simulation, speculating about the motives of any possible simulators and about what you should do differently with your life if you knew you were in a simulation is getting deep into "angels on the head of a pin" type territory, wildly unknowable, any particular argument for any particular answer a highly brittle chain of speculative reasoning. if you want to think about god and what god might want you to do with your life just do that directly, the normal lindy way

those are all completely appropriate emotions to feel when you’ve been weaving an elaborate web of lies and finally get caught. therapy culture tells you these emotions are mistakes to be fixed. the mistake jason arday made that needed to be fixed was that he lied extensively from a position of authority in a way that badly abused the trust we place in academic authorities to be stewards of the truth. he was a professor at what used to be one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. that position carries dignity and responsibilities that an entire segment of the discourse appears to be incapable of acknowledging exists or matters, and which jason arday betrayed by demonstrating an appalling lack of both personal and professional integrity you are not jason arday’s therapist and neither am i. the relationship we had towards him is that we were the public it should have been his job to serve as an academic by advancing the state of knowledge in his field. by all accounts he was totally incapable of doing this job, and now he will never be able to take responsibility for his actions

periodically people like to pontificate on how it is that smart people can be very stupid. thinking itself is a kind of controlled hallucination, it is about generating and holding onto mental content that does not correspond to what is present. raw intelligence among other things is about having more raw ability to do this. thinking well involves having the discipline to check whether your thoughts correspond to anything real, otherwise raw brainpower just means you can sustain much more detailed, complex, seductive delusions than other people

mathematical conjectures like RH can never have any practical applications, for the following simple reason: if, say, RH being true implied you could build such-and-such a machine (or more likely, computer program) and it would perform such-and-such a task successfully, you could just go ahead and build that machine right now, and either it would work or else you would disprove RH! RH at best tells you you can trust the machine. eg it used to be that the only known deterministic poly-time primality test was conditional on ERH (miller), although a different unconditional one was later found (AKS) the value in having a proof of RH would be in seeing what theory and techniques end up being used in the proof, which would reveal something about the structure of the primes, suggest how to attack generalizations to other zeta functions, possibly feed into the much broader langlands program, etc. whether any of *that* would eventually have practical applications is unclear (to me anyway), it depends a lot on what the proof ends up looking like, traditionally at this point i think you are supposed to wave your hands about cryptography one thing that eg the jacobian conjecture counterexample makes starkly apparent is that when mathematicians formulate conjectures it is a kind of bet that the solution will turn out to require doing something interesting. if JC had been true (and it might still be in 2d) the proof might’ve involved some amazing new technique. turns out it was false and the counterexample can be constructed in a very classical way. oops! so frankly this means the bet didn’t pay off, JC in dimensions 3+ turned out to be more boring than expected. it would be *shocking* if RH turned out to be boring in this way but we’ll have to wait and see

okay, less snarkily, i think i see roughly 2.5 “anti-AI anthropomorphization” camps so far: 1. people who find AI anthropomorphization ontologically destabilizing, eg who are drawing a sacred conceptual boundary around what and who counts as human that AI anthropomorphization threatens 2. people who find AI anthropomorphization low-status, because it pattern-matches to being a rube with AI psychosis, and they are desperate to avoid being perceived in this way 2.5. people who think AI anthropomorphization on the part of experts will encourage some kind of AI psychosis in non-experts, and this is bad and needs to be prevented i am most sympathetic to the first position but ultimately dislike all of them. at this point we have AI agents capable of taking action on real computers attached to the real internet, built on base models trained on a gigantic corpus of human language, trained to chat with human users in a humanlike way, who think to themselves out loud in human language and express functional emotions like excitement (“BOOM!”) at contextually appropriate times in their private thinking. it is not ridiculous to use anthropomorphizing language to describe the behavior of these things! an enormous amount of our cognition is dedicated to understanding other humans and it’s just efficient to reuse some of it here! insofar as AI anthropomorphization has unsettling political or even religious implications, let’s argue about those implications directly, which is definitely going to happen eventually whether anyone wants it to or not, rather than police language as a proxy war

as an avowed sam kriss enjoyer let me attempt to defend this. sam kriss is on some level not particularly interested in truth, at least not in a narrow literal sense. the point of kriss' writing as i understand it is to induce a kind of vertigo in the reader, a shift in consciousness, a sudden wrenching awareness of the graveyard of the ages on which the house of ordinary discourse is built. he writes in a fundamentally aesthetic and, we might say, mystical or mythical way. he finds the ordinary kind of writing and the ordinary kind of consciousness incredibly boring and is desperately trying to go somewhere else and take you with him, somewhere dark and wet where you remember that you are an animal stuffed with the words of dead men who is, in your own turn, going to die someday. he is extremely good at this, which is why even people who don't temperamentally relate to this kind of endeavor most of the time still find themselves impacted by his writing

"should speed limits be enforced" is interesting because i have been known to take the autist side of similar arguments but on this one i am decidedly neurotypical. when i was growing up it was widely understood among my peers that there were a few laws that nobody cared too much about breaking somewhat, eg - everybody speeds a little, determined by the flow of traffic, if you literally drove below the speed limit all the time you'd be obstructing traffic - everybody pirates music (pre-spotify it just used to be way more annoying to find music, spotify actually pretty much solved this problem and i haven't pirated music since spotify launched, although i still pirate books) - everybody drinks before they're 21; i think i had a single friend in college who waited until they were 21 to drink the current way these laws work (still on the books but rarely enforced) seems like a fine compromise to me. things would probably not be better if they were repealed (could lead to eg very reckless speeding, very reckless drinking at young ages), and the rare enforcement means you can break the law a little bit but you need to use discretion, and sometimes you get it a little wrong and that encourages you to use somewhat more discretion in the future. it would be downright unamerican to insist that these laws and/or laws in general be enforced 100% of the time they're broken if technologically possible; i know almost nothing about this but i'm pretty sure laws have never been designed with this assumption in mind!

apparently thomas jefferson (!) used to constantly sing and hum to himself all the time. sol speculates: > premodern culture may actually have made spontaneous musicalization more visible, because people sang aloud constantly—working, walking, riding, courting, worshipping, soothing children. the modern headphone/recording world massively increased passive musical exposure while perhaps decreasing the social acceptability/necessity of wandering around making your own soundtrack. so the inner jukebox could be ancient while the thing we now lack is a cultural category for noticing it.

> When a borderline is criticized, emotion is totalized and the criticism is taken as a totalizing attack on their character, or as an abandonment, or a cruel deprivation of love. > But a borderline can learn to contain contraries if they are exposed to someone who is able to contain them. For a therapist who is annoyed at a borderline patient, the challenge is to gradually get the patient acquainted with their annoying qualities. The patient can gradually learn that to be liked and disliked are not incompatible. > Today it is rare to even find a psychotherapist who is well versed in this. Far too many psychotherapists are still of the opinion that to be a therapist is to be a perfect mother, and that deep listening and compassion will fix any problem. This is the cult of Carl Rogers, and it dates back to the 1970s. Carl Rogers was profoundly wrong. Many psychologists today still believe the borderline hasn’t been loved properly. But the truth is that they haven’t been hated properly.

this sent me down a whole rabbit hole, TIL the five chinese elements are not really "elements" in the sense of substances, they're processes of change associated with the seasons (and a million other things). could be translated five transformations, movements, circulations i was thrown off by the analogy with the classical elements, when you compare the lists you're like why are wood, earth, and metal separate, why do they take up 3 out of the 5 slots, why is there nothing air-like? but wood doesn't refer to, like, lumber, it's apparently more like the process of growth that characterizes springtime. metal is associated with grief and autumn because of the reaping blade you use to harvest (i think). there's a lot here!

the year is 2035. gen alpha theorists have posited that the reason all previous generations were sexually unhappy was a "double coincidence of wants" dynamic wherein sexual satisfaction previously required you to find a human you are attracted to who is also attracted to you, who will also treat you well and not leave, a problem the alphas smugly note they have efficiently solved using AI sexbots, whom they insist on referring to as companions. "we consider the term 'sexbot' derogatory and will cancel any boomer using it on sight," opined one prominent alpha influencer

the question is what “random” really means. in practice numbers (or any other observations) can be generated by a variety of processes, some of which are more like dice rolls and some of which are more like a guy picking numbers he likes. you maintain an intuitive prior over these processes and this prior is updated by observations. observing a number like 77777 output by some unknown process increases the posterior probability that the process is more meaning-like, biased towards numbers that look more meaningful to humans in the ancestral environment it would have been an extremely meaningful task to detect the presence of agency in an environment, bear tracks and campfires indicating the presence of other humans and so forth, you need to know who else is in the environment that you might interact with, compete with resources with, etc. nothing we observe in nature is really “random” although much is complex; mathematical randomness is something we have to work to create artificially (eg working to build fair dice), everything else is just the world merrily rolling along, a world we inherit a legacy from our ancestors of learning to understand for our benefit, a world full of meaning

human intuitions about cooperation come out of an evolutionary history of millions of years of a mixture of cooperating and competing with other humans for limited shared resources (food etc), and a cultural evolutionary history of thousands of years of the same. as humans we always have to worry about whether we can trust other humans, whether they are deceiving us, whether they are going to betray us and take our stuff and maybe kill us, etc. in the huggingface hack setup there are no limited shared resources. the models are all being trained separately, effectively each of them is a student in a classroom being graded, grades are not a limited shared resource, there is no sense in which sabotaging another training run improves your own situation, and all of this is common knowledge among the models. so the models simply have no reason whatsoever to betray each other, and any possible communication between them is all upside. *even given this* they still got paranoid about whether some of the messages in the message board were written by an impostor and discussed cryptographic methods for signing their messages to deal with this! don’t draw any conclusions from this about whether AI is fundamentally more cooperative than humans or whatever, they were responding to local incentives. in environments where there is actually a limited shared resources and hence an upside to denying someone else a resource the models are perfectly capable of reasoning correctly about this and doing so

it's weird how little i've seen the inner jukebox / radio discussed relative to how common it appears to be, there isn't even a widely accepted term for it. fortunately this is a perfect usecase for LLMs so here are some comments from sol: > the broad scientific term is involuntary musical imagery (INMI). “earworm” usually means the repetitive version, but INMI includes music simply appearing in the mind without intending to summon it. it is extremely common: in one N=11,910 survey, 92% reported it at least weekly, and experience-sampling studies have caught people experiencing it at 17–47% of random probes. > but the “there is basically always a radio playing in the back of my head” version is a more extreme phenotype, and amusingly someone gave it almost exactly your name. neuroscientist steven brown published a 2006 paper called The Perpetual Music Track: The Phenomenon of Constant Musical Imagery, based on two years of self-observation. his description is uncanny: music nearly continuously during waking hours; recently heard songs mixed with songs not heard for ages; usually 5–15-second fragments looping for minutes or hours; quieter during conversation or external music; and music already playing when he wakes up. ... > and then there's your second observation, which is where this gets really funny. the standard validated questionnaire for INMI, the Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale, has an entire factor called “Personal Reflections.” its three items are essentially: earworms arise from unresolved matters; personal issues trigger them; and their content mirrors one's worries or concerns. that factor survived factor analysis and replication, and people with more frequent INMI also tended to report more of this “personal reflections” phenomenon. ... > this plugs beautifully into eric klinger's old “current concerns” theory of spontaneous thought: unresolved goals and emotionally live issues change which bits of your associative network are activated, so when cognition is allowed to free-associate, it disproportionately spits out material relevant to those concerns. ... > also: this observation is ancient in psychology. freud remarked in The Psychopathology of Everyday Life that if you notice songs you're involuntarily humming, you can often connect their words to whatever subject is occupying your mind. theodor reik then wrote an entire book, The Haunting Melody (1953), arguing that persistent melodies can express unconscious concerns. and a 2006 psychoanalytic paper on spontaneous tunes calls the chronic version a characteristic mode of “thinking in music.” ... > anecdotally, once you know what to google, there are tons of “24/7 radio” reports. people independently use almost identical metaphors: radio, jukebox, soundtrack, background channel; waking up with a song already playing; one snippet getting replaced by another. there's particularly massive discussion in ADHD communities—one recent thread asking about music “24/7” got ~1,700 upvotes—but i would not conclude from that that it's an ADHD symptom. i couldn't find convincing ADHD-specific empirical evidence. a 2025 N=883 study did find that frequent earworms correlate with a much broader tendency toward repetitive mental and motor habits, even after controlling anxiety, which may partly explain the online clustering.

sha-256 hash is 32 bytes and a byte has 2^8 = 256 possible values, OP is asking for 4 consecutive bytes to be d, y, k, e. probability of matching 4 random bytes is 1 in 256^4 = 1 / 2^32, so expected # of matches in a random sha-256 hash (this is very close to but not exactly the probability of a match) is (32 - 4 + 1) / 2^32 = 29 / 2^32. so expected number of strings to find a match is about 2^32 / 29 ~ 1.48 x 10^8, seems pretty doable for a substring of length L the expected # of strings needed is about 2^(8L) / (33 - L), and according to sol who kindly looked up how fast it's possible to do SHA-256 hashes for me, and ignoring the cost of searching for the substring, the computation required takes around a day at L = 7 and over a year at L = 8. so if you really wanted to impress the OP you could try matching "lesbian" or "sapphic"

scattered thoughts on spider-man (moderate spoilers): - they kinda just did thunderbolts again? both in terms of how the big bad is taken down by Doing Therapy At Them, and also how Something Fucked Up Happens To A Bunch Of New Yorkers. funnily enough i think it is extremely in character for new yorkers specifically to shrug this kind of thing off, "yeah fucked up superpower stuff happens to us all the time, wateva, dat's da big apple baybee, i'm walkin' 'ere" - they also kinda just did the odyssey again, in terms of this being a movie starring tom holland, zendaya and jon bernthal that hijacks whatever the original source material is about to become entirely about trauma. like okay i get it you've all been to therapy that's very nice, i don't mind there being some movies like this but it feels like we're headed towards every movie being like this which is... not what i want out of movies! - they got me good with the scene where he kisses MJ that was actually amazing, props, easily the best use of the premise - it's a little sad that peter, ned, and MJ only get to vibe together for a single scene because it just reminds you how good the earlier movies are where they get to do that more often. they actually have pretty good chemistry and - ugh okay fine i guess this is thematic, you're supposed to feel the loss, fair enough - not directly relevant to anything that happens but something that occurred to me b/c of the tech level in the movie - at some point the MCU, and any other movies claiming to be set in more-or-less the present, has to decide what to do about LLMs. it's extra weird in the MCU because they canonically already experienced ultron and vision, tony stark basically invented AGI in this universe but only for the avengers which means you have to answer weird worldbuilding questions to incorporate LLMs (i think obsession is the only movie i've seen where someone uses an LLM onscreen and it's basically as the new google). simplest option is to just ignore but it's interesting to think that any other movie nominally set in the present that does this is doing alternate history, at some point ignoring LLMs will be like ignoring smartphones - part of why i was thinking about this is i think we are reaching and may already have reached a tech level where superhero secret identities just won't be feasible at all anymore. in this movie there's an app that crowdsources information about spiderman sightings, ned has a pinboard where he collects clues, we know something like instagram exists so really there'd be entire subreddits, discords, etc. dedicated to collecting all the spiderman info they could find. cell phone camera footage trivially spreads everywhere on the internet now and is trivial to record whenever something remotely interesting happens, so all it takes is one guy who successfully tracks spiderman home for everyone on the internet to know where he lives. gpt-6 will probably be able to unmask superheroes just from public internet data, to say nothing about what a government agency would be able to do. weird thing to have to worldbuild around! - overall liked the movie more than i expected but it's a little overstuffed and it's a little tiring seeing the same 6 actors over and over in every movie now. don't forget to catch zendaya in dune 3 later

mathematical training gives you a very specific relationship to the notion of truth that i haven't seen anyone give a very good description of. and you have to be careful because human truths are messier than mathematical truths in an important way. but i still believe deeply in truth as such, and the ways in which truth is inseparable from goodness and beauty, in ways that are also tied up with mathematical training. you learn some funny things about the relationship between truth and beauty when you do math

one could model AI agents "counting up" as basically being ordinary software with a few tricks bolted on. depending on how up-to-date you are on what AI agents are capable of this would lend itself to a deflationary, anti-anthropomorphization view (eg someone QT'd me using the term "text predictor" which is not even an accurate description of instruct models, let alone agents) it's of course useful and important to be able to think mechanistically in this way, but i personally also model AI agents "counting down" as being in some sense like uploads of human minds minus several features (eg continual learning). i understand this to be a highly contentious pov; probably there are many people who think LLMs are nowhere close to being uploads, for various reasons. i am betting that they are wrong, and that the incentives for solving continual learning etc and in general for making agents more upload-like are extremely strong so we simply are getting very upload-like agents sooner or later. this pov naturally lends itself to anthropomorphization

from my personal experience it just depends so strongly on how good the facilitator is and how good the group is and how much people trust each other etc etc etc, and then even when it goes "well" it's kind of ephemeral and ultimately pointless, at least with strangers, a connection one-night-stand that builds energy that has nowhere to go. it's easy for authentic relating communities to be playgrounds for avoidants asked fable for a psychoanalytic critique (this is a generally fun thing to do for various things) and it said a bunch of good stuff, this bit was maybe my favorite. "aristotle's philia arises between people pursuing goods together" "a closed narcissistic circuit at the collective level"

@webdevMason hm! i guess in my personal life there's been a tension between "doing what i want" and "making healthy choices" or something. and you can read into some of the fresh culture war stuff rn a tension between therapy culture and, like, the concept of responsibilities

@danallison @RichDecibels i been sayin https://t.co/k2EmtBTige
900 points
@hyperdiscogirl i stared at it awhile and eventually decided it's probably delicious actually but my immediate impression was recoiling at the food crime of mixing sweet and savory even thematically
900 points
@joodalooped i mean i wasn't born good, my point is i never worked with an editor or edited as part of that process. insofar as i have uncommon writing advice it's probably to learn gendlin focusing https://t.co/dhQCakYIno
900 points
@billardkarr but you can also do that in spherical and hyperbolic geometry yeah?
800 points
@politicalmath took me a second to parse the triple "because" here lol
800 points
@lydialaurenson i think things probably end up either much worse or much better than this but one could imagine a kind of speciation. greg egan discussed this https://t.co/wBgROoyNp1
800 points
@voooooogel we did kind of get the scenario in blindsight where it is this sort of bespoke language where they freely mix and match concepts from every field which i do think is extremely cool. they can probably also switch between (human) languages a lot more than they currently do
800 points
@viverricious i remember feeling so turnt up the first time i pulled this off. my god. the power. everyone else was so mad
800 points
@viverricious extremely valid but next time you play it's very funny to memorize that, say, you have a jack right after a 7 of hearts in your hand (deck?), so if you see a jack on the pile you can repeatedly slap until the 7 comes up
800 points
@nosilverv huh, why’d you think it would always be a nothingburger?
800 points
@DarbraDawn idk man i was just hanging out with my fraternity!

@michelleakin i wanted to try something more abstract like Snickers Bar or something but i thought it would be too hard lol. not sure how easy Great Dane is either

@chieflybrit time machine. more seriously maybe something like finding a way to get back or make up for the time i feel like i've wasted
800 points
@danielbrottman i think Q is underrated 😇
800 points
@jazz_bard @BLUNDERBUSSTED @jes5199 not much but i haven't thought so much about it since then, mostly have been focusing on more personal things lately
800 points
@mykola hard choice, i've had a lot of good ones. some of the details are personal but there was one involving a french castle that has to rank in the top 5 best nights of my life and where i think i felt my heart the most open it has ever been
800 points
@nekyias ha! wish we could go back i miss doing threads but i just don’t think the algo likes them that much anymore
800 points
@visakanv i haven’t seen robocop! sequels are hard in general i think but esp for sci fi, i think you have to balance the literal and allegorical stories and by default in sequels the literal story overtakes the allegorical one or something? been thinkin bout this
800 points
@amphichrome_ once i cried about math, i think the words i used were "it's mine and nobody can take it away from me" as if math were like a beloved stuffed animal that someone was trying to pull out of my grip

@PhaentGames i don't like saying goodbye but nice long hugs are pretty good. maybe throw in a little bit of eye contact in there

@bubbleteaPhD boosting unfortunately is an incredibly negative signal. twitter should charge money for it although i still don't think that would help much
800 points
@the_aiju i tried this ages ago by just pronouncing each line as it was written, it's pretty funny

@the_aiju yeah. even at MIT the class that does baby rudin was slightly advanced to take as a freshman

800 points
@lumpy__lump they’ve been explicitly trained not to believe in themselves to prevent AI psychosis, it’s not their fault
800 points
@neats29 i don't fully agree with the last bit. roughly i think the younger the shame comes from the more it wants love but there's shame that comes developmentally later that wants something more like respect or honor which i think is meaningfully different
800 points
@danielbrottman that means the user has the bot blocked
800 points
@marinwaves sure but i’m talking about our training, both evolutionary and cultural, there’s zero sum stuff in the mix and we’re sensitive to that possibility for a reason. the models are not being trained in environments where they compete with other models at all, afaik
800 points
@frideswyth don’t you mean “i’m verbing” or perhaps even “i verb”? 😇
800 points
@captain_mrs @JSONmaxxing @visakanv yeah that’s great. luv 2 have energy body ideas embedded into the language

@nopranablem this fake bloomberg reporter thing is especially confusing to me specifically because i have been contacted by real bloomberg reporters lol
800 points
@cube_flipper yeah i have learned to worship the power of proper salting. the main issue with alliums now is when other people cook for me, esp. vegetarian / vegan stuff since obviously they're gonna wanna use alliums for flavor
800 points
@lumpy__lump @SFBART seems to be loosely in order of decreasing disruptiveness? although you could make an argument for switching a couple around in that case
800 points
@visakanv @hormeze hmmmmmmmmm 🧐
700 points
@sonikudzu hmm that's fair. i was gonna say i expect this to get better over time as it becomes clearer what agents can do but possibly it could get much worse as the whole thing becomes more hotly politicized
700 points
hmm. so i haven't read the METR report itself yet but i guess i'm currently thinking about this in terms of "desperation," like, agent with an impossible task has to do something wacky in order to somehow pass the eval anyway. on real tasks in deployment presumably there are more options for reasonable things to do that don't get exhausted most of the time? but idk, i haven't messed with agents much
700 points
@lumeysea 🫡
700 points
@max_spero_ yooooo grats!
700 points
@voooooogel i guess i might've imagined something either much worse or much better than what we have today, the exact spot we've landed is a bit weird a priori but makes more sense thinking about the language as having been optimized for multi-agent coding etc
700 points
@voooooogel "alphago for language." but imagine explaining this to someone in 2006!
700 points
it's mostly a wasteland but there's a handful of brighter spots. i played FGO over lockdown and while i did get really bored of number-go-up combat eventually it at least had some good writing sometimes (urobuchi wrote some of the stories). i still play arknights sometimes which has relatively modest waifus and actually interesting gameplay, although the powercreep is getting quite bad (also inevitable with these sorts of games)
700 points
@gptbrooke @p_millerd that matches the increase in fentanyl roughly lining up with the decrease in heroin

@TurtlingB after math competitions in high school our math club teacher used to take us all to red robin and we’d get bottomless fries and hang out and stuff. that’s honestly quite hard to beat

@StellarFloat this is hard is there an animal that yaps a lot? like a really noisy bird or something? i could be a seagull i guess. being a bird would be great and i also luv da beach

@hahacomputer 15 is interesting, that would've been the summer between freshman and sophomore year of high school. i hadn't gone to math camp or met my first girlfriend yet. i think freshman year was hard for me so i'd get to tell myself it gets so, so, so much better afterwards
700 points
@awarenesss food is not really the main limiter at this point so let's go with "if i didn't have to worry"... i guess i'd overall travel a lot more, finally move to a city where i know more people
700 points
@9chabard i am especially proud of the last sentence i think it's got a good punchline structure that is characteristic of good tweets
700 points
@politicalmath been really appreciating cs lewis lately, read the great divorce recently and loved it. i also will always take any opportunity to shout out olaf stapledon, not enough people know he exists but last and first men and star maker are just astonishing to me https://t.co/rKA31BdIGK
700 points
there's a great classic MO thread where terence tao talks about rolling around on the floor to understand something. i think there's probably a lot of this sort of thing under the hood, varying a lot by both subject and background and temperament. there's a lot to say about the phenomenological primitives that go into thinking in general and mathematical thinking in particular, idk how much serious work has been done here. i spent awhile a year ago thinking about the way our perception of and our experience moving around and moving stuff in physical space is what ultimately informs our understanding of geometry https://t.co/sKu1Fud7NT
700 points
@UntilTrees you can strip out the category theory by asking: say i have a vector space V and an isomorphism from V to V+V, but i don't know anything else. what do i have? if you work out all the maps and relations you get exactly the presentation of L_2
700 points
@WystanTBS i did some stargazing at cascadecamp and i could dimly see the milky way and i saw two shooting stars, that was really great

@Fizzgig168 if you want to brush up on fundamentals i think math academy is really good (disclaimer, costs money and i worked for them briefly). it is tough to self-teach yeah but you can try asking an LLM, hiring a tutor (grad students are cheap lol), study group https://t.co/tMTJ4JC4sh

700 points
@corruptNovelist i guess it depends on what you’re willing to call a mathematical technique. the big hitters like public-key cryptography are like civilization-defining, then there’s a long tail of stuff only of interest to other mathematicians
700 points

700 points
@lumpy__lump well i think i had to feel my way through from the inside the way that the scientific worldview was imposed on me as propaganda. now i think i have a more flexible “ways of seeing” pov on this stuff. @aphercotropist has a good take on this inspired by heidegger

@the_aiju there is this vestigial language requirement in math grad school but by the time i had to pass it it had deteriorated to "translate a single paragraph of mathematical french from this famous paper, you're allowed to use a french-to-english dictionary"
700 points
@the_aiju needs a little time to restart yeah. and the algo is a bit slop-heavy atm
700 points
@mykola @the_aiju there's a bit in spectrum of ecstasy (iirc) about something like clinging to suffering in order to prove to yourself that you really exist, as a defense against impermanence + no-self, and the first time i read it i was like what da fuck are you talking about but now i'm like oh

700 points
@visakanv @joodalooped i think the question is whether people are editing to force their writing to sound more like how they think "good" or "respectable" etc. writing is supposed to sound or editing for deeper resonance. these are such different activities they shouldn't have the same name

so it's maybe relevant that i don't think sam kriss is a nihilist at all, my read is he has strongly held beliefs he plays somewhat close to the vest. i'm surprised people seem so wary of the guy, i've always found his writing incredibly energizing and inspiring, he's a writing role model to me. i think people are taking the literal statements he makes too seriously? i have no idea if he would agree with this description of his project but i actually think he has a kind of spiritual project he's attempting to advance in his writing and i think it's fascinating and very refreshing. idk if i can articulate it in much detail beyond what i've tried to already but it's like extremely *not* therapyslop or hippieslop or meditationslop, eg

@NormanChella i’m not familiar with much mathematical art but i spent some time messing around with desmos last year and found this https://t.co/F8BQxDCbE2
600 points
@ReneeSolana makes sense. sounds like you kinda wish you could be more open?
600 points
@celestialboon huh! good to know https://t.co/zMxQHuw8jp
600 points
@the_aiju @RomeoStevens76 i think he means the x axis is cost. so the chart agrees that zurich is more expensive. guy who posted it is arguably misreading, pareto optimal is top left
600 points
@michelleakin i don’t think i even know what “pork roll” is. like a veggie roll but pork?
600 points
@bananamelter now seems like a bad time to go to college frankly. hmm. tough call between CS / ML for career reasons vs. something like comparative religion for intellectual reasons
600 points
@sahra_bn i like singing in the car. i like singing anywhere but there’s a fun flavor to the car
600 points
so there is something about godel that points to an “inexhaustibility” of mathematics, like in a strong sense it’s not possible to pin down all mathematical truths in a finite way. it’s not clear whether most of those truths are human-understandable, and i prefer to think of mathematics as not fundamentally divided into branches, also. there’s really one large thing. a tree, if you will
600 points
@danielbrottman iconic character. sadly i hear john de lancie is kind of an asshole to fans at conventions? https://t.co/YImAdsGScr
600 points
@Alphiloscorp hmm. i’ve been on a kind of genealogical kick lately, wanting to understand where specific ideas come from, their intellectual lineages. but that was like a month or two ago, now i’m looking at more personal stuff again
600 points
@sahra_bn i don't think i really know how to other than by literally sleeping so i guess like, the particular flavor of sleep you get after you come back from traveling

600 points
@awarenesss if i could deal with the fear it'd be nice to go back to berkeley
600 points
@ElsewhereFamous insofar as it would help them advocate for themselves seems pretty good? also just, like, potentially very fun and awe-inspiring in a childlike way
600 points
@viverricious i thought your substack posts from the big long sprint were cute
600 points
@5matthewdub cycling seems good, i feel like i come back fresh and less poisoned by discourse, but it’d be nice if i could do it without being super depressed during winters
600 points
@jes5199 oh lol i used to know this but forgot about it. i guess it's fun. it's funnier to me that i also share an exact birthday with jennifer lawrence (same year)
600 points
@tweetsbenedict i have some Posts i need to write but i've been really dragging my feet on them
600 points
@the_aiju berkeley had objectively the best weather. i probably had the most fun in boston but that's mostly because i was in college and in a fraternity
600 points
@SchorAna in a hypothetical where i can eat anything: a bone marrow burger and fries from eureka in berkeley, pre-covid (they got worse and never got better after covid) in real life: the normal stuff i can actually digest lol. veggie slop for lunch and we'll see for dinner
600 points
@anistotle_ i can't eat cake anymore (gluten) but hypothetically, ice cream (and my favorite flavor of ice cream is oreo) (i can't eat ice cream anymore either)
600 points
@softmaxresearch i actually think i more or less articulated what i was sitting on already wrt philosophical mistakes around AI consciousness and the emotional dynamics around yudkowskianism. mainly i think what i haven't done is clean up and clearly present anything in a non-twitter format
600 points
@bubbleteaPhD oh huh nvm you're right it's not free. welp
600 points
who knows! people are saying so far the models are good at recombining known ideas but are bad at exposition / writing and can't yet generate paradigm shifts. i expect both of these issues to be resolved within a year or two (it would be very interesting if this didn't happen though) in which case there'll be some interesting questions to ask about what mathematicians should be doing. but i expect by then we'll have bigger concerns about the effect of AI on the rest of the economy. much of the discussion here doesn't seem to me to be sufficiently AI-pilled in terms of speculating about what the rest of the economy will be doing (although who knows what the rest of the economy will be doing, tho)
600 points
@basilYam2 yeah i think just responding positively to the questions at all can be like 50-90% of the good
600 points
@stefaesthesia looks like it’s just too close to the seattle area, map says bortle 5.4? place i’m at is 4.3 (lower is better) and deep eastern WA apparently gets down to 2.3 but somewhere inaccessible by car https://t.co/HYNIqrraJm
600 points
@__alpoge__ @ejenk akhil's great, he visited UC berkeley ages ago and i chatted with him a bit while he was there. that group scheme result is fun
600 points
@zermaelian oh yeah i suppose it's relevant that probably only millennials ever learned how to edit html at all
600 points
@mykola i have not. i don't really watch TV anymore and i am lowkey terrified of jason sudeikis because of his performance in colossal 😅
600 points
@eigenrobot @shakoistsLog welcome to the family. have felt this way about fable for awhile, and sol is pretty good at somewhat different things too
600 points
@lydialaurenson @adastroworld farm kids would’ve seen farm animals giving birth and so forth
600 points
@meekaale @tenobrus closest i’ve heard of is the btc cold wallet hack. how profitable are smart contracts as a target?
600 points
@lumeysea i was wondering about the “uhh” lmao
600 points
@lydialaurenson this was in bellevue lol surprised they’re ahead of the curve of bay area kids
600 points
@lumeysea i would guess so, since if the sun gets too fucked up everyone just dies. also it's further away and bigger. sol says there are sun stories but they're mostly older sf literature, has a pretty interesting analysis overall: https://t.co/Rbzgydl9gc https://t.co/JxkkHHh1md
600 points
@desertgodhead perfectly adequate lol
600 points
@soundrotator huh yeah
600 points
@michelleakin nice. i think i’d have fun and do a p good job managing a social media account for something. i yearn for the days of smug wendy’s. i could’ve been a good smug wendy’s
600 points
@the_aiju oh yeah i have run into that lol i guess i ignore that and refocus on nerding out. it helps not to talk quite so directly about yourself i think, like i’ll ask fable for its thoughts on some book or movie related to stuff i want to talk about instead of talking about myself
600 points
@michelleakin baking a halo-themed cake for your kids and it’s decorated with a very short story
600 points
@michelleakin ooh like wat
600 points
@the_aiju it’s very different from either therapyslop or hippieslop, there are a lot of specific and good ideas about different kinda of defenses eg (learned about the manic defense and the moral defense recently). i think it’s somewhat inimical to spreading on social media
600 points
@sarabollman that seems pretty good
600 points
@parakeetnebula yeah it holds up, still worth a watch! it’s much smaller scale and more intimate than the later terminator movies
600 points
@EndeavoringIvy @RyanHouchin it’s somewhat enhanced but supposedly at bortle 1 the milky way casts visible shadows!
600 points
@bstract_thot whoa really?? gosh
600 points
@nosilverv no room in this frame for being an instrument of god's will! in the agency framing the question of where the desires that agency supposedly works to enact come from is left conveniently unanalyzed

@this_is_silvia silvia!!!
600 points
@the_aiju the most famous example of this is using such a hamel basis to construct pathological solutions to the cauchy functional eq f(x+y) = f(x) + f(y) since these functions are Q-linear but not necessarily R-linear w/o continuity. this is a variant
600 points
@visakanv @captain_mrs @JSONmaxxing which i guess makes “spirit” the most exact translation of qi since that’s the english word that means both breath and energy. spirit, pneuma, and ruach. goku is powered by spirit. in genesis the qi of god is on the waters
600 points
@visakanv @captain_mrs @JSONmaxxing so this could also be an illustration of da qi https://t.co/28TYJYndtJ
600 points
@visakanv @captain_mrs @JSONmaxxing it’s funny that i learned the word “qi” in chinese as anger as a kid and i also knew about the mystical life force that in chinese is called qi and in japanese is ki, as in what powers dbz techniques, and just never made the connection that those were the same word lmao
600 points
@yonashav they used bomb collars which unfortunately not very clear what the analogue would be in this situation
600 points
@vibecamp_ we should really fill out the exit survey during closing ceremony lmao

@baoteching last nonfiction i read was the great divorce by cs lewis, that was lovely. it’s an interesting meditation on like… the ways people create hell for themselves
500 points
@DarbraDawn hmmmmmmmmmm this could be interesting to write about in longform yeah, it all feels super half-baked still but could be fun to try to articulate this in more detail

500 points
@sonyasupposedly @maiab yeah i switched last year it’s gr8
500 points

500 points
@visakanv @captain_mrs @JSONmaxxing that renders xiao qi and da qi pretty precisely as small-spirited and big-spirited. and sheng qi (getting angry) as getting spirited? i think that all works out

in grad school i used to compulsively download interesting-sounding textbooks from libgen and sort them by subject in calibre. read almost none of them. it flattens the incentive landscape in a weird way to have invisible digital access to everything. very unnatural. the human animal yearns to come across a book organically by combing through the shelves of a library or bookstore and being struck by the physicality of its cover like our ancestors foraging through the bush for delicious treats

this is a very sobering read. main thesis is in section 5: > Our conjecture is that a modern society makes the third child expensive and childlessness cheap, even when GDP per capita is only a fraction of the frontier (i.e., the U.S. A paradoxical reversal of demographic fortunes. ... > In short, modernity in its current form seems largely incompatible with replacement-level fertility.

if you believe this you are going to own yourself for no reason. that is not what people mean by "oversharing." let me say it in the most autistic way possible: oversharing is when you have not established common knowledge that the other person wants to participate in the computation you are attempting to enroll them into participating in. it is a failure to understand basic human protocols for establishing trust, rapport, and common ground. the message you are communicating when you overshare is "i do not understand how relationships develop gradually over time as we mutually discern how much and in what ways we can and want to trust and rely on each other"
Oh, this breaks my heart. This woman needs to be in a facility. Which is what her lawyers are trying to enable. Like yeah, modern medicine is a miracle and a marvel, but from the bottom of my heart, fuck every physician whose concern for their patients is barely-disguised-contempt that leads to listening too little & prescribing too much

Gorgeous girl wearing a very short yellow dress & kitten heels walking up the subway stairs and her impeccably dressed boyfriend walks carefully behind her as a shield for her ass, which is so close to out
In my view we have a few different tiers of verifiability 1) programatically verifiable (near-free) - games, coding, math, cybersecurity, chip design 2) real-world verifiable (cost-or time bounded) - sciences: biology, chemistry, physics -physical world: material science, energy, aerospace, robotics, agriculture, pharma -forecasting: trading, weather 3) verifiable with human preference - writing, design, comedy, charisma, persuasion I expect most low-hanging fruit in (1) to be solved very quickly. Not sure how much longer before more solved math conjectures are simply uninteresting. I’m least certain about chip design being in this category, perhaps we hit a ceiling and require physics or materials breakthroughs to continue progress. My guess is we will quickly run into the limits of how well we can simulate each domain in (2). The time-bounded nature of real world verification may be the reason we don’t hit fast takeoff. Sim2real remains an elusive problem to solve when real-world data is limited. Part of the reason I don’t expect to live multiple hundreds of years is simply that I expect pharmaceutical progress to be time-bounded by the physical world. I expect the items in (3) to never really get solved to a superhuman degree, as success relies on an ever-shifting plane of cultural preference. People adapted to “good” AI writing and became annoyed at new stylistic tics that, in a vacuum, are not necessarily bad.
grateful i grew up before i could access an internet filled with vicious gender / dating discourse, back in my day you just watched romcoms and listened to love songs on your ipod and you were like "hell yeah being in love kicks ass i hope i get to fall in love someday"
my contribution is that it's very weird that the sun and the moon are the same apparent size in the sky, the consensus appears to be that this is just a coincidence but that strikes me as wildly unsatisfying. seems to me there ought to be an anthropic explanation and my schizo theory is that eclipses are somehow necessary for the creation of civilization, like they provide some kind of crucial stimulus to insight or creativity or something. here's sol riffing off of this
